BMW BREWS TURBOCHARGED 3-SERIES??

According to this week's Autocar (UK) (4/21/05):

BMW is to launch an uprated version, the 335i. Due on the mainland in just over a year and in the UK six months later, it will feature a turbo-charged version of the 3.0-litre petrol engine found in the 330i. This boosts power by 72bhp to around 330bhp, which is just 13bhp short of the current 3.2-litre M3, and looks likely to get you to 60mph from rest in some six seconds.

The turbos will be fitted so that one works at lower engine speeds to boost low-end torque, while the other picks up higher up the rev range. Autocar speculates that it will be mated to a DSG-alike double-clutch gearbox, for seamless shifting.

According to this week's Autocar, which broke the story, it's intended to plug the gap between the 330i and the forthcoming M3, and will have a 4.0-litre powerplant shoe-horned in, along with a hefty price. That won't launch until 2007.

Still hardly fact, and we've been hearing this rumor for a while now, but it would be fun to see a turbocharged 3.

If this is turbo thing true that means there'll finally be a bmw you can squeeze more hp's out of without shelling out huge bucks, or at least your dollar per hp increase will be much lower. I'm excited... turbo in a bmw

I think BMW is like Honda with regards to turbos. With the exception of diesels, I think they want to stay away from forced induction. Reason is simple: Turbos generally don't last the life of the car. I think both companies want their engines to hold up for a very long time, and this is not possible with turbos. I have had several turbo cars in the past, and you are lucky to get 150,000 miles on the turbos before a rebuild is neccesary. Most engines these days can easily go over 200,000 miles. Diesel turbos are alittle different because diesel motors are much more thermo-dynamically efficient, meaning they harness more power from the combustion process, thus reducing exhaust temperatures. Turbos generally hold up better on diesel applications because there is far less heat generated around the turbine assemble where the bearings sit. Also, there is no other way to make diesels efficient other than turbos, so I don't think either company had much choice in the matter.

I have nearly 160,000 miles on my Volvo T5 wagon, and it still has the original turbocharger and still uses absolutely no oil between routine oil changes. Manufacturers have been building turbocharged cars for nearly years and have most of the kinks worked out now.

With respect to BMW, there was a project with KKK/BorgWarner to develop a twin-turbo 6-cylinder E60 5-series.

The project was scuttled, I hear, because the HP output was close enough to the V8 that there would be little reason to purchase the V8. It would be VERY nice if there were to be a turbo 3-series but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I really need to be teased about 300++hp in a JR. M3, I don't think BMW needs to bridge the gap between the 330i and the M3, especially with the added cost of $7-10k, the price would be to close to the M3. Anyway I hope BMW does'nt throw an extra 70 or 80 hp in my face in a year, since I'm paying a premium for my new 330i. Also if most PUBS. are testing the new 330i in mid to high 5's 0-60 and this turbo might be equipped with 330hp, nearly identical to the current M3, should'nt 0-60 times be about the same? 4.6-5.0 secs. I don't want to see BMW sell out on Turbocharging unless its on a true supercar to compete with the Porsche GT's and Ferraris of the world.

standard e90 330i can do 0-60 in 5.862 seconds (best ever recorded) ive had mine do it in just under 6 seconds with a onbord computer and the 335 does it in 5.5
