OK, I'll start off by saying what I was doing wrong. I was pulling hard on the left side of the vent (as hard as I dared) to no avail. What I needed to do was slip the metal putty knife in as far as I could get it. For some reason, that clip (it's basically a steel "shaft" that slides into a receptacle--insert joke here ) was tighter than the side near the gauges.

First, the tools I used (from any ACE Hardware)

The rest, in order (yes, my car's dirty!).

Great, spydrz! Now please use them properly and be safe in fog.

I will-I had one on my 97 A4Q and I learned to drive in Baden-Württemberg.

Spydrz...niceee. Did you have to use both the steel and plastic knife or is one sufficient? Also, the panel holding the switch snaps off pretty much the same way, right?

I used the plastic one at first, but it may not be all that necessary--I didn't want to scratch or chip the edge of the wood trim. But for 89 cents, it helped.
My advice is to try to get the metal one as far underneath the panel as you can, the whole vent assembly should come out pretty straight.
The switch panel is easier, I just got my hand behind it and eased it out. Don't use the blade or it'll leave marks on the dash or that plate.

Spydrz: Thank you for sharing and for your advice. Will probably embark on this little project this evening, can't wait

Sounds/looks pretty straightforward...let's see if I got this correct:

1) slip in the plastic putty knife (door side first),
2) wiggle it a little bit to open her up a little
3) replace plastic putty knife with steel putty knife
4) push steel putty knife all the way in until you hit the steel peg
5) twist the putty knife a little to settle it in and pry upwards (?)
6) Trim piece should clip/snap off easily and completely
7) Put hand behind switch panel
8) Push out (towards you)
9) Unclip wiring connector from existing switch
10) Replace with new euro switch, clip wiring
11) Clip everything back together

Is that pretty much it? Anything I missed? Any care and attention I should look out for when replacing panel and trim?

Thanks....

Sounds good, except for I'd loosen the vent trim closer to the steering wheel first. Just maybe a 1/4" or so.

The vent panel really popped off, and it flew out at me. Just be sure to catch it!

The panels just pop back in, nothing to it. I took the thirty seconds to clean out the inside of the vent, it still had pollen from March!

Yes, I'd love to hear if I'm (hopefully) the only one with a hard-to-remove trim panel

Really easy DIY...

I used a plastic putty knife to get under the wood trim on both sides. Work it in so that the entire knife is under the trim and pry up. Start steering wheel side, then go to the outside.

When it comes to the black piece that holds the switch, just pull straight out... swap switches and push back in...

I love it already
