Question about where else the 3.0 turbo will go

Hey guys,

My dad has been looking at upgrading his E46 330i ever since I took home my E90 323i in January.

He is especially interested in the 335i and the M3 but also would be extremely interested by a 5-series with the new 3.0 liter twin-turbo engine from the 335i... i.e. a 535i.

Does anybody have any info as to the availability of the 535i any time soon?

Thanks!

Since the 5 series 07s came out in April 06 I don't see any changes anytime soon. Any engine and badge changes will probably happen for 08 in a year from now.

It won't be that long.

There is talk that the 530i will be updated with the new direct injection engine this year.

And already e60 customers are clamouring for a 535d that uses the aluminium block installed in the 335d.

I think there will be a new 535d and a 535i by March 07. I also think the 525d will be replaced with the 3.0l detuned engine from the 325d.

For more rumours look here:

If the turbo engine ever found its way into a Z4 coupe, I may crazy go nuts.

The release of the DI N53 is the stickler here. Not much point to the bi-turbo in the E60 if they can put the N53 in the 530.

Well the DI engine is a definite for the e60 and in the UK at least the 535i will be a big deal - although it will effectively kill the 540i and make the 550i even more of an 'exotic' decision.

I do not think it will because the z4m has the 330hp engine and the turbo is too close. I hope it does also though.

As apples-to-oranges as it seems, I am actually cross shopping an M-coupe and a 335 coupe, among others. A Z4 3.5 coupe would be a great compromise between the two cars, and make my purchase decision much easier.

The Bi-turbo N54 engine will filter into the 5 series and very likely the 1 series.
The regular 5 series line up will be: 528i,535i and 550i- these will be MY2008 lineup.
There is a rumour of a 135ti being caught testing- for the time been that is still under the hush.

so the general concensus is no 535i until MY2008, then? I guess the 5-series would be up for a facelift at the same time at that point?

2007 5-Series has been on sale in the US for a bit already. You must be referring to the 2008 model.

This is what stirs my curiousity. The 3.0L turbo in the 5er would be almost as quick as the 4.8 V8. There's certainly not enough of a performance gap to justify the V8's $10k+ premium.

Not only that, but isn't the 4.0 a new-ish engine? Would BMW kill it off entirely, so soon after it's introduction? I think we will either see a delay in the introduction of the 3.0L turbo to the 5er/7er, or the 4.0L V8 will not disappear entirely but will be around in 4.0L V8-turbo form exclusively, effectively replacing the 4.8L V8 as the top executive model, 100hp below the M5.

maybe I'm not paying attention but hasn't the 4.0 v8 been gone for 5-6 years??

The aluminum 4.0L V8 that powers the 540i, 640i, and 740i in most of the world? It makes 306bhp, and is mentioned like crazy in all the 3.0L Biturbo press releases, as the horespower is obviously identical. It was introduced recently, in 2005.
