Why I am not buying a 3
The 3 series has made my short list twice when I have been in the market for a new car. And it's been rejected in 2007 and again for this Fall's 2010 model year. I like everything about it -- styling, handling, German etc... Why then you ask? Simply, the engine choices suck. The 328 is underpowered for a car in this price range. Let's face it every v6 accord, Toyota, and even Chevy will kick the snot out of you and the 335 is turbo powered. In my opinion, turbos are unreliable, thirsty, hot, expensive, and again-unreliable. You don't have to go any further than the posts on this board to figure that out. The whole purpose of a turbo is to force more power out of an undersized motor therefore shortening the engine life (I drive 30k a year). What is even more annoying is they make a sweet engine package, the 330 that they offer in Europe at 272 hp normally aspirated sounds pretty perfect to me. I am not a speed demon but I like to be able to merge and pass with some power if necessary. It seems that the marketing boys at BMW think that Americans and Canadians are unworthy of a smart choice. Please don't suggest that a 70k+ M is a practical option for 30k miles a year of commuting and business driving. As Chris Rock would say, I am rich, but not wealthy.

I'm not sure if this is just a rant or you're trolling (you just registered and drive a Ford pickup truck) ?
But what you're saying is pretty well understood by everybody. And it's also pretty subjective. I prefer NA motors but using blowers has been going on for a long time in the automobile world. Nothing wrong with that. Some of the world's greatest cars have FI..... past and present. Don't forget that manufacturers market cars in various parts of the world for various reasons. Also they build motors not to just please a few people, but to be profitable. |

I have had two E90 335s. Likely going on my third very shortly. Have had one unscheduled trip to the dealer. My cars have never stayed overnight for service. The N54 far from "sucks" and has been very reliable for me.

Yeah you keep driving that F350 30k miles a year, that is clearly the practical choice. If you need to pull a horse trailer all over the country the 3 series is a poor choice anyways. If you take a look around the forum a bit more and check out the mod potential of the 335 you might get why people are buying them.

you rant yet on a previous post you stated,
"I've pretty much fallen in love with the new E90's and have been giving serious thought to ordering one."

I just left a honda for the 335xi... It may have it faults, and problems (but what car doesn't at some point?) If you let everyone else's failures and problems influence your decision that is your choice, but don't come onto a forum to state why you won't buy it... Most of the people here really don't care... They bought one and are happy with it, so what you say will mean nothing to them... Now maybe you should have posted this up on a car review website, or something, but seeing how you don't actually OWN a 335 or 328, or other 3 series vehicle you should refrain from commenting how you won't buy this car (without any real experience with it)

1. I really think you need a life instead of registering to forums just to rant about it?
2. If you don't like it then don't buy it, go buy your honda then? no one needs to know about your miserable life. 3. you will get no attention in a honda, we will get all the attention we want in our BMW. 4. BMW and Mercedes-Benz are the #1 cars in the world for a reason. It's also a reason that honda/toyota/chevy aren't. 5. honda/toyota TRIES to make "luxury" cars with the CHEAPEST material. Engine isn't everything. I know this not from personal guesses, but this is what a salesman at a Honda dealer told me straight up. 5. chevy is garbage. GM is trash. 6. you drive a ford.... 7. BMW FTW. +1 |

Your right
It was 2005 when I first looked at the 3. (no coupe then and first year of new car) Chill, I need that Ford, it pushes the snow out of the drive in winter (500ft driveway) and launches boats in spring and pulls them out in the fall. 2005 is hardly a "new register" I just don't hang out here being that I don't drive a BMW currently. And as a matter of fact I am quite familiar with v6 accords as thats what I keep my wife and daughters in and they blow the doors off a 328i on a freeway ramp (I have test drove recently). My question is why don't they offer the 330 in the U.S.? In my opinion, as a consumer, you are getting screwed with no choice in what is a fine automobile.

FYI I get 32.7 mpg at 70 mph with A/C on in my 335, hows that F350 do? ![]() The 330 isnt offered in the U.S. since to sell an entry luxury sedan in America you have to offer a 3__ hp _-6 engine; fill in the blank however you like. The twin turbo motor attracted a whole group of enthusiasts, such as myself, who would not have considered a non-M BMW before. As you said, the 328 could get beaten up by an Accord, but 328 owners buy their cars for the handling. If this has to be explained, you probably shouldn't be looking at one anyways - not an insult, it just makes no sense to pay the premium prices for these cars if you don't take full advantage of what they were designed to do. I sure as hell wouldn't recommend a (new) 3-series to any non-enthusiast. |
