Very loud noise while shifting into second?

Anyone else driving manual cars and hear a lot of noise when shifting into second? It just sounds like metal banging on metal. I can shift into 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th gear with no loud noises at all. I got the car at 26,400 miles and the noise has been there since day one. Could it be a worn out clutch or is this normal?

Sounds like 1-2 synchro, possibly but I am no tech.

I have a similar grind - 99% when it is near or below freezing outside on a cold engine.

And it's not my driving...

I hear a noise when my engine is cold and when i press the clutch in (disengage) to shift into second it sounds like the clutch "bangs" into something

The 1-2 shift in these cars takes more finesse to get perfect. I think I know the sound you're talking about, but wouldn't call it "very loud". When are you shifting? Try shifting from first above 3k revs and see if you get that sound. I've heard this when catching second too quickly (from maybe 2k in first) back when I first got this car. Shifting a little later yields a much smoother result.

Other than that, I doubt it's the clutch. If it's anything mechanical, it could be a syncro. Swing by the dealer and have them take a look anyway, especially since you're the second owner of the car.

If it's gears grinding, it's the 2nd gear synchro, but my guess is yours isn't worn, it's just normal. As jopa489 said, the 1-2 shift on BMWs can take a little finesse -- try putting it into 2nd a little more gently, don't ram it in and you should be fine.

Take a look at the Car & Driver 330i long term test final test specs (done at 40K miles; here's the original test specs for comparison, and here's the article if you're interested). Anyway, in the 40K mi sheet, it's interesting to note that the tech said "Had to shift slowly out of 1st to 2nd or the gearbox let out a nasty grind." So it's not just you.

I find that I can get perfect smooth shifts into second if i do the following:

w/o AC on - 2500 RPM
w/ AC on - 2750 RMP
