i took my car to a local bmw shop this week and the tech found the spark plugs to be in bad condition so i had all six of them replaced. the jolt at idle is completely gone at both stop lights with or without AC. so for anyone experiencing similar symptoms (my car had about 58k miles when it started to do this), check your spark plugs.
Did this solve your issue still? I'm having the same problem and if it's just plugs I would happy to replace them myself.

Anyone else have updates on how they fixed this problem?

This may not be the exact name, but it is your A/C idle sensor, it ups the RPM's to compensate for the slight strain the compressor put on the motor at idle. All cars with A/C have them.

Anyone find a solutions? The shop I took my car for this problem tried a new alternator and software upgrade and it didn't fix it. I'm going to try spark plugs next.

Anyone else figure this problem out? Still having the problem. Going to replace the spark plugs this weekend.

Also, anyone know where to get the idle control valve? I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks!

Yes but only with the AC is on. The car will jolt forward.

I know this thread is old, but my wife's 07 328i with 53k miles is doing the same thing.. Are spark plugs the culprit? Or the A/C idle sensor? Or??
Thanks

Update: So I started with the easiest things first and cleaned the MAF sensor and added a bottle of Chevron Techron to my wifes 07' 328i with approx 50k miles and for about 4 weeks the "surge" all but went away except for a minor surge the other day. There may be a correlation to the surge and the AC being on on hot days, but I have not been able to confirm this for sure. Regardless, although I find it hard to accept, it seems as though the Chevron Techron and MAF cleaning may have had a postive effect on what we were experiencing. Only time will tell if its something different, like coil packs, plugs, and/or sensor(s). If it returns on a regular basis again I may try another bottle of the Techron before investigating further. Hopefully this helps, and if anyone can further elaborate with their experiences, please do.

Well, figures. The surge started up again as it did a month ago! Anyone find a firm resolve to this issue? Forreal50, what did you end up doing?

Update:

I replaced all the spark plugs and 1 coil (the one in the front of the engine). That fixed the idle surge problem for me. Have not had the problem in months. I'm not sure if it was the spark plugs or just happened to be that one coil but the problem is gone.

Cool, how did you know which coil was bad? Did you replace the plugs and install the new coil pack on each cylinder until the symptoms stopped?
