Window Surround Problem

The surround on my windows (driver, passenger, back seats and sunroof) is wearing away.....

I've done some minor work on it using back to black stuff but it keeps fading away. It almost looks like some sort of corresion...

Anyone got any suggestions on how I can sort the problem out?

I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Thanks.

Are you talking about the rubber trim around the glass? Or the metal trim piece (black or silver depending on model?)

Sounds like a bad quality part to me either way. Are you still under warranty? If so I would complain to the dealer - the E9Xs I have had live in a much harsher climate with hot sun in the summer and snow / ice / salt in the winter and I have never had any issues with any window trim material fading or degrading.

I guess another thing to consider is where you park. If you park under trees alot the sap is corrosive and could be causing damage...

Hope this helps

I'll have to check the warranty.... I haven't owned the car since new.

Do European BMW's come with a 2 or 3 year guarantee? It's a 2007 model I have, so what warranty were they coming with back then?

I don't park under a tree or anything like that, I can't figure it out.

Thanks for the reply

The warranty is transferrable, so no worries about being the second owner. My dad has an E92 in Ireland and I think he said it has a 2 year warranty. I think the UK is 3 years, not sure about mainland Europe.

Either way, if you have a 2007 I would deem this unacceptable!

I deem it unacceptable as well but there isn't a whole lot the garage will do for me if it's outside warranty.... I'll have to check it tomorrow.

Would the dealers in USA actually help you out if the car is outside warranty? They certainly wouldn't over here! As you walk in the door the dealer would see €€€ signs, that's it.....

I think it depends on the dealer really. Some can be more helpful than others. I had excessively noisy Bridgestone RFTs on the E90 I had before my current car, and BMW would only cover replacement of 2 tires due the mileage being about 12k, but the dealer covered the remaining 2 tires themselves out of good faith.

If you have an obvious quality issue, I would try complaining about how this is unacceptable on a premium vehicle. I know first hand how much Bimmers cost in Ireland and having what you have would irritate me on such an expensive car!
