I've seen keyfobs on eBay for around $20. I think you have to get them programmed at the dealer for a fee though. I don't know about the metallic key inside either.

back when i had the e36 328i, i bought the fob and paired it myself with some funky engine on/brake pedal combo from the e36 forums.

wonder if the same works in e90...

Just had one of my fobs replaced for free because the Roundel had worn off. Wear & Tear FTW.

Dealers won't re-program it for you. They order a VIN specific key from the factory.

Speaking from first-hand experience -

I had my 06 E90 (pre-CA) fob replaced due to the roundel coming off (back when BMW was a bit nicer about that).

What I remember very specifically is that the car itself paired with the fob. That is, the fob was "blank" electronically from the factory. All they did was hand the fob to me, I placed it into the slot and then I could see interesting things happening on the radio display (don't have iDrive) as the new key was married to the car. I would gather that once the key was married, there's no going back.

I suspect the metal part was custom. If I remember right, the key came from Germany through NJ.

Sorry, don't have any cost information as this was warrantee.
