Wheel Hop

Hello,i currently own an e46 m3 with smg and am contemplating trading it in for a 335 with a steptronic, my question is - do you get any wheel hop at the drag strip; if so, how bad does it seem to be and what ways can it be
dealt with?

thanks, harry

they'll be a lot of spin but not too much hop

not bad for a car with no LSD... try launching a 350z, they have the worst axle hop by far out of any car i've driven

I've gotten wheel hop a small amount, while running the runflats, both stock and tuned. It doesn't happen often, but I also have a lot of passes. I wouldn't worry about it too much, but it does happen.

For those with wheel hop, do you have a limited-slip differential?

I had horrible wheel hop at the drag strip. A well prepped launching area and RFT's made for bad news.

changing tire pressures worked well for me. Just have to play around.

That's not going to be my solution
I'm not planning to hit dragstrip nor have my 19'' wheels with inadequate pressure and drive in NYC
I just need nice bit of a wheel spin instead of jumping rear when i hammer the throttle

Why do you need wheel spin?

Does it matter?

I always drive with DSC completely off
There are ocassions when i need to take off fast dry/wet
I get wheel hop on either surface unless i overspin
This car launches perfectly with 3-4k rpm with my current setup
I just hate when this happens, the whole car shudders

If you are really interested in taking off as quick as possible than you dont need wheel spin.

Actually you do!
The point is not to overspin, but just make right amount of it

Anyways, can i please have some suggestions of a fix instead of lessons on launching the car?

That makes no sense...

If you are "spinning" your tires then you are going nowhere. A modification to prevent hop will only prevent hop, it will not keep you from overloading the rubber and going nowhere. Going nowhere != fast. On the street, with street tires, wheel spin is nothing but a show. If thats want you want then use more throttle to keep the rubber+pavement into kinetic friction otherwise you'll just blow the water/bleach/etc off and just get hop.

I do not have a LSD but a lot of hop... Although I recently changed my tyres presure from 2.2-2.3 bar to 2.5 and afterwards it became much worse...

Was raised before, but would a M3 suspension help on this one?

I think AndreyATC is correct if I'm reading it right. A little wheelspin is preferable. The people who replied to him are picturing him just spinning his tires for show/smoke, but when launching a split second of spin is showing that when you let go of clutch, you're on the breaking point.

Thank you for understanding reply
No plan for smoking tires or any of that nonsence
Just trying to get rid of that nasty wheel hope in case tires do break loose
My point is: good or bad launch with small or larger amount of spin should always result smooth spinning, not the-whole-car-shakes spin

P.S. I hate when thread goes OT
Thanks HighVoltage for your usless (incorrect) replies

It means you've passed the breaking point and you need to keep practicing to find that right RPM clutch release.

If it is shaking, you need to back out of the throttle for split sec. You can limit the hop with suspension hardware. Then you end up trading hop for spin. But then whats the point? Neither one gets you to the end any faster..

Did you bother to read the OP?

"my question is - do you get any wheel hop at the drag strip; if so, how bad does it seem to be and what ways can it be
dealt with
?"

Whats "usless" is to throw hardware at a software problem...always fix the software between your ears first.
