Being 22, The main inconvenience for me is getting stopped by the Police and asked if its my car. Other than that, my mum is full of criticism of me for the purchase, whereas everyone else is either happy for me or a little bit jealous.

No real bother here, get some admiring looks - the car not me :-(
Perhaps I'm let out into traffic a bit less but who cares.

No bother here either thankfully. Most people who comment mention how nice it is.

It doesn't matter what you drive, someone else will always be driving something worse and be jealous. I've had nothing bad said to me, even my dad has asked about buying it once I'm done! I've had the usual banter from my mates - about it being a drug dealers car etc., but they're only pissed cos they're still driving Golfs and Focus!

Hmm - Golf R32 and Focus RS/ST are pretty capable cars...

See I don't automatically assume the Beemer is better than anything else. Being a lifelong car geek and driver of probably hundreds of cars, I take each brand model by model. Some brands have the odd pleasant surprise tucked in a range of general mediocrity.

I had a black 53 plate 730d sport for about a year, used to get the "have you just landed from space?" look when the wife and kids (aged about 2 and 5 at the time) piled out of the car at the Asda or the local chippy.

True!!!! I got searched. YES SEARCHED...needless to say they asked if it was my car. Everything was in check and they let me go. They were so expecting me to have stolen the car or have something dodgy on me. They steamed into the car park and parked literally a foot away from my car. There were 3 police officers. They did a full vehicle check but didn't search my cousin or I having talked to us for a bit and realising we weren't chavs but normal "law abiding citizens" which I quote...

The cheeky officers having realised they made a total boo boo even forgot to offer me a search record which I dually asked for in the end. Two of the PCs even asked how fast it went and complimented me on my car?!?!

The joys of being a BMW owner...but I love it really

Most probably but I have never had an M3, 330i, 330d, 335d, 335i, 535d, etc, etc cut me up or tailgate me - it's always a 318i, a 320d, etc. Maybe something to prove? Or maybe not - just an observation. Same goes for Audis - the ones up yer ar5e are always the small engined low end models.

I tend to receive more positive comments than owt else.

I do find it brings out the worst in other drivers though. Never have I had more problems with Audi drivers wanting to play than with this car. Even though it is a small engined BMW I also get this problem from those big engined bad boy cars like the M3, 330d, 330i, 335d and 335i. Sometimes they forget that this car can handle though.
Bully boys.

I do try to make sure that I drive in such a way that goes against other peoples pre-conceptions. Most of the time.

Last time for me was last week on the way to a charity meet. I was alone, middle of the day, not speeding, not a convoy. But the car was clean so looking at its best.

They were actually very nice to me, so I was polite back and went on my way...

I almost take it as a compliment, as if they are admitting I've done well for myself when they are double checking if it could really be my car.

Sure theres a jealous aspect to it as well..

I try not to get ideas above my station, but it still makes me smile when I feel jealousy etc etc. Not in a chauvenistic or protagonistic way I hope... I guess I was an underdog in school so now I have classic "look whos big now" syndrome HAHA.

Anyway..

I grew up amoung fast cars so got into them very early.

I used to love washing:

The Porker 928 S4, two 924 Turbos (actually these were a bit cack), three ur Quattros (the last one a Treser), a Ferrari 308 GT4, a Jag V12, a Ford P100 pickup with a 400bhp V8 shoehorned into it, a BBR Shogun (nearly 300bhp), two new mk1 GTis, a new BMW 323i and probably some I've forgotten!

Petrol (and now diesel!) got into my veins at a young age!

here is an anonymous letter i got thru my door in 2002, and it convnced me I needed a Miltek. lol I know who sent it and I wound the fork up of them for months.

Quote:
To Mr BMW.
I have taken upon myself to write this letter to you regardning your truly aggressive, extremely dangerous ILLEGAL and well over the top high speed driving. Not only are you endangering the lives of other drivers, but also pedestrians who may be crossing the road, especially the elderly, infirm and young children, whose road sense may not be as good as it should be. They would stand little chance of avoiding being hit at the excessive speed you drive around in a residential area. Not only is this dangerous, it is also extremely noisy in the early hours of the morning, when families with children are still sleeping. If you are a little boy racer, you might have a palatable excuse, but as a so called adult, you clearly have little or no respect of the Highway code. I feel as with many other residents in the Brent area, it is only a mattter of time before you cause a serious accident, or even kill someone. May I suggest that IF you HAVE to drive at high speed with your silver machine, here are many racing circuits you can use. I hop you take this as friendly advice, because if you continue this kind of driving, it will lead to fatal circumstances.

Please feel free to show this letter to the police at your earliest convenience, for if this continues, the police will certainly be informed of this matter.

Yours sincerely, a Brent Redisdent.

Ps There is an old saying, a car with no wheels, is a car going nowhere.

Pps DRIVE SAFELY.

e46 M3.

The issue with the car was the exhaust was +very+ loud first thing in the morning as it warmed up. It was a very hot summer in 2002 so at 6am you'd hear me drive down the street, but not fast because you simply can't drive fast down the street. But it sounded very fast, all legal though and there were a couple of honda exhaust boys near us who made my M3 sound like a Gwiz in comparison.

The letter I am 100% positive came from a neighbour 3 doors down who was incredibly jealous and use to stare my wife out when ever she was parking her car or what ever. I actually went round my neighbours with the letter "apologising" and the shock on the womans face when I turned up at her door with it was priceless Both me and the wife knew right away it was her. And really was nothing to do with the exhaust. I got the police involved through a friend whos in the force and they knocked on a few doors nearby.

You should have seen the look on her face when the new E92 M3 arrived bwahahahaha! And just to be 100% clear having faced noisey neighbours and the upset that can cause I am not being unreasonable, the cars are stock etc and I don't have Bangkok Ghangsta Rap blaring out the window either.

Regards,
Neil.
