For all my cars, I've done oil change every 5k miles, and all my cars run past 200k miles with absolutely no engine problem, which saved me a lot more money in the end.

There's going to be a lot of lemons on the road in a few years.
It's occurred to me to change it earlier, I'm no dumb ass. I've always babied my cars. It's just this is the first car that has "free" maintenance, though at undesirable intervals. I just scheduled it for this Saturday. They do 1 year or when the silly light comes on. It's been one year so here I go....

Garage List
What is the reason for an oil change at 2k?

I understand changing between 5k and 7.5k. While the oil maintains lube quality, filters will have degraded filtering properties. Hell, even non synthetic oil maintains full lube properties between 5-7.5k.

My car has 1500 miles on it right now. I just called service at my dealership and the guy recommended every 7.5k. So that leaves me paying for every other oil change. Not too bad I guess.

Because as your engine breaks in, fine metallic particles come loose from the cylinder walls, valves, rings, etc. The leftover microscopic particles from the machining of the block, and the inital metal particulates from the engine's break in are all in the filter in the first 2000 miles. You need to get these out of the engine and oil.

Of course BMW engineers are obviously much smarter than me in this theory, but I will go with my own instincts.

I gave in an changed my oil for the first time at 9,000 miles. I just felt bad for torturing my car. :-) I'll do it at every 5,000 miles from now on. The next oil change should be free. The dealer doesn't reset the clock when you do an interim oil change.

I must admit, the engine runs more smooth and even has a little more pep. I like!

Cool Oil Change

Has anyone posted directions on the oil change technique for the 2009 335i? I have done my own oil changes up until now, but am in the same quandry
as everyone else, with the BMW scheduled oil change at 15000 miles, and that seems too far off. Any special tools or things you have to watch out for? Also, people have indicated Tischler's is the place to get the parts, yes?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Cheers!
