Allstate quoted me roughly 3,500 every 6mos because I never had an insurance policy. I am 30 and live in Queens. Geico quoted me 1,000 every 6mos. I took defensive driving and its now down to 865 every 6 mos.
BMW's partener, Liberty Mutual wanted 9,000 a year. Are these companies smoking crack. I have a clean record and above average FICO score..

interesting, just did an online quote from allstate and got 1,340 every 6 months (For the durango, they don't even have 3 series BMW's on their list all all and I didn't feel like calling) which would save me $410 a year. Maybe it's time I switched out of Geico because if people think Allstate is expensive, and they are $400 cheaper than Geico, then something is wrong here.

I am 99% it was 100/300 I believe that is what is required with a leased car.

What is this defensive driving, you mean you can take a class and get lower rates? OR, did you have tickets and had to take defensive driving?

A little off topic, but it's $1500/6 mos for me once I take delivery of my e90 335i. It's expensive, but German minimum caps are higher, and you also have the Autobahn factor

It's amazing how much of a difference living in NYC makes for auto insurance. When I was living in Brooklyn, my wife and I were paying $1800/yr for liability only for a 1997 Acura Integra with GEICO. We were both in our late 20's at the time, clean records, had discounts from several professional memberships, and my wife had even taken the defensive driving class.

We moved to NJ and got a 2nd place in Orange County, NY (where we registered our cars). We kept the Integra (liability) and added a BMW 330i and Volvo S60 2.4T (full coverage on the BMW and Volvo) and we now pay just under $2000/yr.

The original poster lives VERY close to Long Island, so I guess he doesn't get the NYC "penalty".

If you have points on your license, it will help reduce them. More for people who are in danger of losing their license.
Most insurance companies give you 10% discount if you take a defensive driving discount. I took the class to reduce my insurance premium.
The class costs $45 and its 6hrs long. Check the AAA website.

It is a class that you can take cost can range anywhere from $15-50
If you have tickets it takes 3 points off of what you insurance company will penalize you for...
If you have a clean record it reduces your insurance rate by 10%

The class is 5 hours long..Basically teaches you how to be a safer driver and avoid accidents. The discount is good for 3 years, then you must take the class again.
I think you can even take it online now.

I have a shady driving school in the area..basically I pay the $50, and sign the attendance sheet and I am done...They do not make you take the class.Although it is rather informative.

I can't blame the insurance companies, a lot of people around here drive like assholes, especially if their car is already damaged. What do they care if they mess up your car?

WOW! 3K a year!

How can that be -- I hear that in Germany everyone drives like Schumacher and never gets into accidents I thought all you guys were excellent drivers?

Autobahn factor -- come on what is a few 100kmh among friends

Joking!!!

Yeah, like if you live in any part of Brooklyn, your rate will be much higher than the rest of New York. High theft rate, Russian insurance fraud ring, etc.. About the Garage, Geico didn't even ask me. Maybe I should call and ask.

Insurance rates include all kinds of factors, including your driving record and whether you're married or single, whether you are garaging the car or not, and how your neighbhorhood fares on auto theft reports (it's more detailed than just the city and some parts of NYC have higher thefts than others).

Not in NYC, but I was glad to hear that with the VIN the price actually went down. When I shopped, they didn't have the model in the computer yet, so I told them it was a 3 coupe, 2k7, and price was nearly 45k....girl said additional $320/6 mo. as it wouldn't be my primary vehicle. Saleswoman was saying maybe it would cost more when they got the VIN due to twin turbo...hope she's wrong and sounds like she is...
