i just finished the install. Took my an hour to do it cause the damn quick connects were so cumbersome to use. And no...I don't have have big block hands. Because teh quick connects were so difficult for mu to use, I disobeyed Calvino and (gasp!).... cut the brown and red wires. I stripped both ends and twisted them together (red with red, brown with brown...obviously). I dod the same with the wires on the new part. Then I used regular old electrical screw caps to hook up the appropriate wires. Tested it all out. everything works, no fuses blown, no error messages, and no trips to the local burn unit.
Thanx Calvino..... this DIY and the ability to plug in DVD players in the back will make road trips with my daughters MUCH more pleasant.

I'm thinking of buying one of these hardwire car adapters for my Delphi RoadyXT.

http://www.myradiostore.us/power-acc...rware-tao.html

From what I see, I think going through this mod but installing the hardwire cable instead of the extra 2 power outlets should work. I was thinking then I could attach the voltage converter to the rear of the blank faceplate (where the 2 outlets would have gone). Could anyone chime in on this and tell me if it might be feasible? Thanks!

Edit: The reason I'd like to do this is cause the lighter adapter that came with the unit is huge and looks ugly with the cable spooled in my ashtray, had a low-profile right-angled lighter adapter been available (for example the one Monster makes for iPods) then I would gladly buy that and stick it in my armrest socket.

Your idea should work. I'm not clear on where you have the Roady XT in the car. As far as power supply you could just use the quick connects to tap into the wires that supply the center console outlet. I can't tell how large the converter is, but there should be room to secure it inside the blank space you refer to (where we all put our dual outlets), then run the plug into the center console to the receiver.

I have the Sportscaster in the Sunglass Tray. What I did was run the rear power outlets to the back from the connection for the vacated power source for the lighter inside the front of the center console. I then tapped off of those wires running to the rear and connected a single 12v socket, inserted the XM car power plug in the socket and tucked it away under the Sunglass Tray. It's easy to access the XM plug by removing the shifter boot. Now I essentially have a hardwired XM, the Rear Power Outlets, and the socket in the armrest console is available for the phone or anything else. I ran the audio cable from the XM under the console an up right to the AUX intput in the armrest. My center pocket is now uncluttered - no more multiple power sockets, wires, etc., just a phone charger and glasses - and room to chill that drink

I already have the RoadyXT mounted on the bottom-left corner of my dash, just blocking the driver's heated seat button and 1/3 of the DVD slot. It fits perfectly with my aluminum trim and the "Sunset" colour setting matches the amber instrumentation quite well The reason I didn't go with a slimmer unit and integrate it into the ashtray is that the screen would be below my regular field of vision, with the RoadyXT where it is now, I can just see the screen without moving my head which is perfect.

I hid the antenna wire through the driver's footwell, and up around the left side of the dash, there is a groove near the back that it's tucked into, then the antenna is stuck onto the dash a little infront of the top-mounted vent and a few inches off from the windshield pillar.

The audio cable is also tucked away and plugs into the aux under the armrest. So the only thing I need to address now is the power source, which at present time is plugged into the ashtray cigarette lighter and the cable is sitting in there spooled, so I can never close the darn thing. If I go this route with the hardwire kit then I can run the wiring the same way as the audio cable.

Edit: Satellite radios are rather expensive here vs the US too. So I bought the RoadyXT via a special promotion for CDN$200 that gave me the unit and car kit, activation fee and 1 year subscription which I thought was pretty good Normally those things sell here for 99.99 then 14.99/month plus 14% tax. Oh, it also came with 2,500 Air Canada Aeroplan miles.

Thanks! I installed it a month ago. I get lots of comments on the smiley face. I wonder if BMW designed it that way.

Has anyone else noticed the replacement panels are slightly lighter in color than the originals? I'm kind of hesitant to install it because of that. Is it very noticable once installed? Mine is beige btw.

Thanks,

You got a defective one. Mine is the exact color and blends perfectly. Trust me, if it wasn't perfect everyone here on the boards would know about how I was working to fix it.

Any word on the dealership quick-connect part that we can use instead of splicing into the wires?

How much did the part cost you in Canada? My dealer wanted $38 for it.

I bought it from Crown BMW - like a lot of people did in this thread - @ $15.41 USD. On the same order, I also bought the swith to enable the rear fogs @ $54.73 USD. Freight was extra $14.13 USD from Crown. At time of delivery, I also paid $48.31 CDN for import charges which include duty, GST, brokerage fee, and brokerage GST.

Success! Rear outlets are installed. I used vise grips to tighten the quick connectors - worked like a charm.

The hardest part of the install was clipping the completed assembly back in place. Maybe the new wiring was in the way, initially, making it a tight fit?

if I'm having hard time finding quickconnects here... could I do it in a way:
- cut the black connector from the new piece
- cut both the red and brown wires in the console
- connect 1 red from new piece to 1 red ending in console
- connect 2nd red from new piece to other red ending in console
- do the same for brown

this would create a loop where energy would be going through the new piece and then to the lighter in middle console...

hope this makes sense, is it possible???

if I was you I will not cut the cables in the console, try to pell them off a little and attach the new cables to it and Solder them together or use black tape good luck.

cut the wires in console, put them both in one end of connecter, put other two wires from new piece into other side of connecter and tightened... the same on the other side, wrapped with a bit of tape to make sure and everything is working fine
thanks calvino!
