What oil you guys using

My last change I used German Castrol 0w 30. Looking for different alternatives. I have no oil cooler so my car runs a little hotter. Should I run a 10w 40 or 5w 40 ? Has anyone used the same oil they use on the M motors TWS 10 40.

I use Redline 5W-30 and I have noticed I usually run 5-10 degrees cooler than I did before. I also added the Redline "water wetter" to my radiator fluid. I change my oil every 5-6k miles and replace the BMW filter (plus o-rings) every time.

The main difference between the options you refer to is that 5W will operate (flow) down to about -40 Deg C and 10W to about -30 Deg C. The 40 figure means they have about the same viscosity in heat. The basic principle is that a wider span has more additives. More additives generally means there are more substances that wears over time, so a wide span may not be recommended if not required by driving conditions and the wider span cost more money to no use (if that is the case). But, there is always a but...the 5W will flow better during normal cold start also in summer temperature, which is important since the most wear is taking place during the warm-up phase. I guess this is why BMW recommends 0W or 5W and just 30 as upper number for most applications.

Peple running on high viscosity oil, which is fine, needs to be a little more careful before the engine is gunned after cold start. But this is not a big deal compared to any oil since it takes about 10 miles of driving before the engine oil reach operating temeprature where it is supposed to provide the best protection.

A bad thing is to start the engine shortly now and then during storage periods and let it idle for 4 or 10 minutes to "lubricate the internals". It only generates a LOT of condensed water in the oil, which needs to be disposed by full heat cycles, i.e. driving for some distance until water evaporates by heat.

That's why your car is so slow.

In my 350Z I used Mobil1 and it left my exhausts tips very black and wasn't really noticeably better than the stock oil. I switched to Redline and it seemed to run a tad smoother, cooler, and a little more power. It also didn't seem to blacken the exhaust tips as much. I also noticed during a dyno shoot-out my car was the highest non-FI for both RWHP and RWTQ and I had less mods than most. Many think the Redline helped... all speculation but either way I won't use anything else anymore.
