Salesman said E92 Turbo will last 100K miles....Is this true? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I ask about durability of the turbos and salesman said it will last about 100K mile before having to be replaced. Is this true? How will if affect horsepower when the turbos go out?

it may be true...they could last longer even if you treat them right. But if you lose one, or even both the car will be more or less undriveable. I lost a turbo on a 2000 Audi S4 and it just smoked and chugged along until I got it off the road.

This is why I don't want turbos really. Uncertainty.

But they will last more than 100K for sure. If it was the case, it would screw BMW 's reputation.

They better last more than 100k miles... Thats very poor product development if thats the lifespan of those turbos...

Well, we have a family friend with a 993 porsche turbo, and I recall him replacing the turbo after around 120k miles or so. But its really not as big of a deal as some of you are thinking. Just think of it as a really expensive tune-up.

MTBF. mean time before failure, average time it takes a component to fail. Of course it will break! They aren't indestructable you know!

Personally I rather go with a 328i than 335i beacause of the turbo thing

1. BMW runs these engines through extreme tests to insure durablity.
2. Just like the AcAvenger said, it's not that big of a deal. My injectors on my 97 M3 started going out after about 70k...just replaced them all after the 1st one went. Cost of doing business

When, not if, they fail, time to put in 2 large turbo units!

It will last as long as the rest of the engine. There's no reason to think it's lifespan will be any shorter or any longer than any other engine or all the other parts in the engine. Turbo's have been around for years and years.

I have 170k on my Volvo's Mitsubishi turbo and it still uses no oil. I think that Audi and Porsche use KKK turbochargers, not Mitsubishi. Not that it should make any difference.

Maybe the salesman has been dealing with customers cross-shopping Mercedes, Audi, Volvo and Saab turbos for the last 20 years and he didn't read the latest BMW Official Sales Bulletin about turbochargers.

who can say for sure if this is true or not, but if it is how much would it cost to replace the turbos? i personally dont think this is true but i guess we will see in the next few years.

huh? if my turbos go out after 100k miles im going to be pissed. who knows tho, maybe ill NEED to switch my e92 for a m3 around 60k miles :rocks:

I sell semi trucks (w/ mercedes engines) and most of these guys get over 300K miles out of a turbo that is not as good as the one on the Bimmer. So you should expect the turbo to last longer than you will probably own the car.

People with the (z32?) 300zx Twin turbo's will remember that the turbo's on them would only last right up to 100K and usually would be at least a safe bet to replace then.

Like I stated earlier the mondern Ball bearing water cooled turbo's should outlast the z32's late 80's technology easily.

Turbo's a pretty stressed (well, maybe not in this application) moving part. Depends all on how you treat it. I'd be willing to bet that if you drive really hard the things will die in the low 100k ish range. But you'd probably be needing an engine rebuild then too.

And other smaller maintenance parts like the water pump etc would be nickel and diming you before that anyway.

The way I drive, I wouldn't really expect my motor to make it much past 100k before needing some work. If I had a turbo I'd expect that to be one of the things it'd need.

No different in my mind than needing new brake rotors ... it's a wear item.

The 335's turbo's are low pressure turbo's and they dont spin nearly as fast as say Z or an Eclipse turbo. I had a 1996 Eclipse turbo running 18 psi of boost and the Turbo died and 30k miles 11psi was stock. I replaced it with a $3500 aftermarket one that was bigger and ran 17 psi until I got rid of it at 120k miles with no turbo issues just lots of tranny issues.

If I had to guess the 335's turbo's would be close to $8000 to replace them both.
