ZF-Sachs Carbon Fiber Damper

Here is the link to the press release. They claim that it halves the weight of a comparable aluminum damper. Very cool IMO. They also said that it would be "realistic" to move these into mass production and that, while they are initially just being considered for A-segment cars, they could be adapted to larger vehicles.

So this appears to be the shock and spring for the rear in one piece? Doesn't bode well for aftermarket springs.

CF may be tried and true but I'm not ready to adapt to putting it on my car as an actual functional and necessary part.

I'm sure you know, but there are lots of cars that are made mostly of CF. Even the F1 Monocoques are made from CF... Mclaren F1... Lotus Elise IIRC... what else? Just trying to make you feel better about it

I know. Lots of stuff made out of CF. They even make airplane parts out of it. But I dont drive race cars nor do I fly plains.

Its pretty proven, but I'd still take the extra weight.

FI also uses carbon fiber for the suspension arms at all 4 corners. My concern would be longevity on a street car. This is a very cool looking component though.

If you prefer the driving feel of a Lotus or Porsche Cayman compared to an Escalade, yes.

Reduction of unsprung weight is really important IMO.

It'd suck to see it dirty or scratched! That would rip my heart out! Cool looking suspension though, wonder how much it'd change the handling of a 335i!

If you read through the press release: not much. They are being targeted toward compact vehicles and I believe that ZF goes as far as to say that the additional cost is "minimal." They are production ready as well, btw.
