Averaged 42 mpg--is this even possible?

07 328i with Auto tranny

Drove 65 miles the other night on steptronic M mode (changed gears at roughly 3krpm) and averaged around 42 mpg. I had half a tank full before I left and before I started driving, the estimated milage I could cover was 140miles and by the end of the trip (after 65 miles) it grew to 175miles. Top speed was 85mph at 6th gear, and average speed was around 65mph. I barely used any fuel.

Any reason why ? It's my first time driving M at a long distance. When I switched back to DS mode towards the end of the trip, estimated mileage lowered to 140 in a second! Is M the way to go?

I usually average around 13 mpg in the city, and 22 on highways in DS mode. So 42 on M was surprising.

My Auto 335 averages about 19 mpg driving over 100-150 mph regularly. Worst in DS or manual mode; then again when I flip the tranny selector over, it's to get down.

The best I've done is 29mpg and that was in cruise control over 205 mile trip at 70mph.

42 mpg seems difficult at 85mph

42 - not possible
Doing calculations based on few miles and BC showing miles-to-empty is not going to be accurate
Regarding manual mode, i averaged better MPG on my 335d loner in M vs D as well
But i kept rpms below 1500

No, you didn't get 42 mpg unless, as stated, it was all downhill. Somewhere along the way, your calculations must be wrong. But I wouldn't be surprised if you said you got greater than 30 mpg for the trip. Just not 12 greater.

The highest mpg average I've ever seen for a complete tank in my 08 328i coupe is 33. That was 100% highway with cruise around 70mph. The total miles was somewhere right around 520.

I drive 120+ miles per day (all highway) and rarely get better than 27 on a tank. Not exactly driving conservatively, but there is just no way you can get 42 on normal terrain.

You must have mistakenly received a prototype '07 335d that they badged as a 328i.

All I did was I just drove the car at the speed limit (100km/h or 110km/h highway, 80km/h freeway, 50km/h residental), time my acceleration very carefully and allow inerta to drive the car. There was no tail wind that day and the road that I drove to obtain this record contains uphills, downhills, straights and turns.
Are you converting From metric to U.S. gallons or Imperial gallons?

The best I have ever gotten so far was 34.6 mpg on a 88.9 mile stretch Beaumont - Houston on I-10, exit to exit, non-stop, cruising between 75 & 85 mph. I filled up right before I got on the freeway and filled up again with 2.567 gal right after I exited the freeway.

?? that's how much I get in 320d, and no way is 328i is as frugal as 4cyl turbo diesel engine.

The max for a 328i for any sustained period of time is right about 35 in absolutely ideal cruising conditions. For reference, though, under similar conditions a 320d would probably get upward of 55, and a 335d would top 45.

The BC "miles remaining" adjusts constantly with the throttle input. You can never use that as the basis of mileage.

I live on a mountainside where I have a 3 mile 10% grade downhill towards work - I get 99.9 mpg every morning.

All about conditions. I can average 36 mpg in my 330i on perfectly flat road at 60 mph. I think the engine has a sweet spot for efficiency. With a tail wind and coolish air, I image 40 mpg at 60 mph MIGHT be possible.
