Pardon my ignorance, but what is the purpose of this "hidden" volume indicator?

Mainly to assist in setting input sensitivity levels properly on amplifiers or processors we install. It really does save a lot of time once you know which number to go to.

Ken,

Any testing in HiFi? If you see the other thread regarding recoding to HifI that I just posted you will notice I now have to have the head unit on 55/55 (MAX) in order for MS-8 to detect it, in Base mode I only needed 45/50. I don't know if 50 on base = 50 on HiFi but I suspect it might and that this is an indication I now need to switch to low level inputs.

Did you switch from the input HARNESS to the RCA inputs? I now see you were wondering - yeah, totally. Speaker level hits 9v and HiFi hits 5v.

Does your car have iDrive?

Not yet, no as i didnt know what to expect. There was a possibility that the outputs would go to flat HIGH level on the 2010-11

Based on the behavior described above would you assess that the full hifi conversion (flat-LOW level) has succeded?

Well just spent some time tooling in my car...I don't need some fancy device to tell me...as anything over 45/55, I now have audible distortion in the vocals. The other tell tale is that if I use 55/55 (the only volume that the MS-8 detects, and then add +1 on the aux input, the MS-8 signal detection goes from "OK OK OK" back to Signal: "None"....which means the signal has become so unrecognizable that the MS-8 doesn't even detect its own calibration track.

Looks like I'll need to add RCA connectors ASAP.

HiFi = low level => RCA inputs

Why are you even trying to use the high level inputs?

To answer your question, the results of the recode were not certain to be low level, but in retrospect, they appear to be.
...From above a few posts

From another thread:

if you look at the link to Gizze's thread a few posts back. He seemed quite clear that the bastardized stereo EQ went away with the coding.

So sorry for confusing you Kaigoss, but this was a test.

Since MS-8 is only picking up a signal at 55/55, not 54/55 or 56/55 (using "AUX-in +1" volume) It would appear the signals have indeed gone LOW level, and that in order to get a detectable signal to the high level inputs, I must MAX out the LOW level signal which is backed up by the fact that when I go to 56/55, the signal goes back to "NONE." This phenomenon was described over on DIYMA where Andy said that if the signal is SEVERELY clipped, the MS-8 won't even recognize its own calibration track.

So i THINK this means I got my low level inputs

LOL, ok. I'm glad you're sure now. I would have been satisfied with "HiFi" on the secret radio display screen.

Well in my research, WHILE my car was already in the shop, I discovered that ISTA/P has TWO conversion paths
  1. Hifi System Alpine
  2. Hifi System Conversion

In the "Base Stereo measurements" thread, montr confirmed that the 268 retrofit amp (which required the HiFi system Alpine coding) was configured for HIGH level inputs (though it had an internal jumper for low level).

Thus, I was concerned that coding path "1)" (alpine) path might code the HeadUnit to HiFi - Speaker level, while path "2)" might code to HiFi - Low level.

The tech invited me into the bay and hooked up my car again to see if we could find the SECOND path after he had already done the first but it was too late...neither was an option any longer. So I was worried.

However, my VO now shows option 676 (HiFi) and doesn't show any information that would indicate a "Alpine specific" hifi retrofit. It looks like it came with HiFi from the factory

I only wish I had a more reliable way to measure than my ghetto tests.

So Kaigoss...when are YOU going to recode or get the new DA2?

I tried recoding once but it did not work (coder did not have right cable). However, I cannot seem to find any shortcomings whatsoever with the current signal path, so I'm not sure there would be much of an improvement.

Fair enough...though I thought I remembered you saying you had slight clicking/popping.

For $104.50 it was damn worth the piece of mind :-)

Yeah, the popping is still there, but I've learned to live with it.
