A noob and a DSLR

I picked up a cheap DSLR to play with the other day. Here's a shot that I was quite fond of. This is straight from the camera, no editing.

Oh, and my inner rear taillight went out earlier that day

Pretty cool shot, indeed. You'll be amazed at how much you'll learn and how quickly you'll pick it up the more you shoot.

I started off my interest with photography by trying to read through the "DSLRs for Dummies" series. But I'm a hands-on, visual person. So just keep and shooting and enjoy!

Nice. Take your photos in raw (nef for nikon) and edit in photoshop light room play around with the settings until you learn what they all do. Videos on YouTube help as well. Read around and shooting more is the only way you'll learn more.

I have photoshop cc but am a photoshop noob as well. What are the advantages of shooting in raw? I wanna say I've heard it easier to adjust the color in post-processing or something.

Yeah lightroom isn't as complicated as as the regular photoshop it's more like a photo library and editing but it has options that are more focused on photography vs everything else photoshop has. Raw is basically the info the sensor sends to the camera so it has all the info available so when you edit it gives you more flexibility since there's more info if you shoot in jpeg the camera sets certain parameters and saves it with them and compresses it losing a lot of info. Raw takes up more space obviously. For photos you want to edit keep it raw for things like family gatherings etc that you just wanna take pics and not edit jpeg is fine since you don't need super images. Takes some time to learn but it's not hard. Also once you get the hang of everything go for an good lens as that what makes photos the body make only a difference in certain situations and features.

Good info. I took a few test shots in raw then opened them in photoshop and was able to adjust all the variables. Some of the pictures I took were really blown out but then I just had photoshop do the auto fix for exposure, highlights, shadows, etc. and it made them look so much better.

Here are some of the ones I took today, shot in raw then did some very basic editing like removing the front license plate holes and ugly headlight washers.

Have you picked up a nifty 50 lens (50mm) yet? The best initial investment when getting into shooting w/ a DSLR

Yup, that was the first lens I bought. The 18-55 kit lens is mediocre.

Nice. lightroom makes it easier to deal with pics because it helps import to computer and gives you categories like date and mark pics adn rate them etc. good way to keep track of a bunch of pics. good luck with your endeavor
