e92 - Rear-View Mystery Sensor

Can anyone tell me what this is?

It's on the front side of the rear view mirror and you can only see it from outside the car. My friends 06' e90 does not have it.

- Not the rain sensor
- Not the auto headlight sensor
- Not the auto dimmer (that's on the mirror side)

There's a second sensor for the auto dimmer (one on each side of the mirror). That's probably what it is.

As mentioned above, the autodimming feature has 2 sensors

Its needs 2 sensors to determine if there is a bright lights behind you.

It compares the brightness infornt of the mirror with that behind the mirror, if its brighter behind you it dims the mirror, if its brighter infront of you it undims the mirror

Yeah, that makes sense... But how come the 06' e90 does not have this other sensor and it still dimms the same?

He's got to have 2 sensors for the autodimming, one in the front and on the mirror side. The one on the front could be smaller then the one in your pics thought

They do have them, but just not with that "white" lens over them ( Aslong as the car has autodimming mirrors )
They look more like the sensor on the side facing backwards

It seems the mirrors with the lowprofile "clown nose" have the new lens over the sensor and the ones with the older long "clown nose" dont have a lens over the sensor

Its usually in a little hole in the back of the mirror itself
