E90 Auto-Open Trunk

A friend messaged me last week to see if he could use my car as a test vehicle for auto-opening trunk systems he's developing. He has to modify the gas struts and install a specifically weighted compression spring to help the trunk pop the whole way open once you release the latch from the handle or key fob.

It's been on the car a couple of days now and still works perfectly.

Probably not, as it would need something much more complicated to close. It's a pretty simple execution to be honest, but it takes a lot of time to get it working just right.

This is why he's testing it out. The compression springs can weaken after a while, so it's all about finding the right weight spring to use. He has the setup on his E46 for quite a while now with no issues (although the E46 requires a sprung bumpstop to give the trunk that little extra pop).

I had that on my 2000 Caviler Z24. Press the boot release on the FOB and after increasing the tension on the torsion bars (boot lid springs), auto open; done.

I like it but I always sit on the 'open trunk' button too often by accident.

It's a pain especially if you have something in your hands! I'm usually carrying boxes or computers and considering the fact that live in Vancouver, Canada, it's always raining. Sometimes, it's a nice quick thing to pop open the trunk as you approach so that you can just dump in your items and not get soaked!

Make it work like the F10 that pops when you wave your foot under the bumper with CA and I'll be impressed.

I'd kill to have that in my car. Can't think of how many times I've had my hands full and could've used something like that.

Watch the ball joint of the struts ... the springs create a lot of stress there. It got to the point where the joint broke after 1 month and the strut shot through into my rear windscreen.

where can we purchase his auto open struts?

my 80's mitsu/chrylser hatchback would open itself when you pulled the hatch latch. This 47k sticker car can't pop the damn thing open? for those talking about lazy: when do you ever open your trunk? 50% of the time is to put something in, 50% of the time it's to take something out. That means 50% of the time your hands are full. I fucking hate trying to balance something on my knee while standing one legged to pull open the trunk. Why make a button on the key fob if it doesn't pop open? I still have to grab the release pad button thing to pull it open.

James (the guy who makes these) modifies the OEM struts with different joints at both ends to prevent this happening. The modification is also required to allow the springs to sit more comfortably at the end of the strut. Only time will tell I guess...
