best motor oil for my 335i

hi i just wanted to know which is the best motor oil for my bmw 335i....

Your going to here alot of crap about !!only use bmw's suggested oil" witch i think is a certain type of synthetic oil but their are a handfull of people that use performance oils like Q or royal purple.It really doesnt matter when it comes down to it but i would suggest royal puple 5w 30

Motul (LL01 approved)

Royal Purple (been using this since car purchase although not LL01 approved)

LL01 is BMW's "stamp of approval" & without it they say the oil is substandard. They also say 15K mile oil changes are fine ..........

you be the judge.

My car has consistently run smoother & engine oil temps stay 15-20 degrees cooler with the use of the 0W40 RP.

I use Lubro Moly on my 330i, you can get it from BavAuto (they recently talked to Lubro Moly and lowered the pricing, it's a little higher than the BMW OEM oil now). They also sell a "Engine Renewal Kit" which is a package of a couple other products (Engine Flush, Motor Protect, and a year's supply of Ventil Sauber and Jectron).

I use the kit on my 330i (which I bought used at 70k miles) and switched from the BMW OEM oil to Lubro Moly and my engine has been running *much* smoother ever since.

BavAuto also recently wrote an article on Lubro Moly in the Fall 2009 edition of their newsletter.

I use Total/Elf INOZ 5W 30. BMW LL04 approved!

Will BMW do an oil analysis on lease returns? My car does not have an oil cooler and I would rather use this RP oil if it runs cooler.

The only time they'll do an analysis is if there is a catastrophic failure of the engine or component therein.

at what milegae do you change your oil using redline and how much cooler are your oil temps

I have an NA car, so I don't know what my oil temps are, but I live in Phoenix and must cope with the extreme heat here. I'm still running Mobil 1 0w40 as my car was under warranty at the last change, and I wanted a certified oil, but now that's not under warranty, I'll run redline 5W40 (I already have RL gearoil in the diff), and will change every 7,500 miles.

The M1 0w40 improved the idle significantly (now much smoother) in outside temps of over 100F, so it can cope with the heat better than the factory oil. I expect the RL to be even better from that perspective.

M1 0 W40 shears really badly in environments with direct fuel injection, and extreme heat, which is what our N54 is. If you do use it, i'd be changing it every 4-5K miles to be on the safe side! A better bet for you in that AZ heat, is Total/Elf 10W 50! That oil can handle the heat, with no shearing.

Interesting, you're the first person to suggest Total/Elf. Do you have some independent testing you can point me to?

Used oil analysis of M1 0W 40, shows shearing after 4K miles. www.bobistheoilguy.com. I'll have to look for the link to the UOA of the Total/ELF product I saw a while ago, on a mercedes forum.

I've been researching Elf oil, and according to the Elf websites, Elf Excellellium LDX 0W-30 and XLL 5W-40 are both BMW LL01 approved. The 10W-50 is not approved and too thick to consider, as it may compromise cooling of the pistons. If you look at the viscosity ranges of BMW LL-01 approved oils, the Kv100 runs from a low of 11.3 to a high of 14.1. The Kv40 viscosity runs from a low of 63.6 to a high of 93.

I've found a couple spec sheets on the 5W-40 (including what appears to be the official ELF spec), but none have the HTHS rating. The only way to accurately compare the oils includes this rating. If someone point me to this, can they please post.

It would seem like ELF's parent company TOTAL, changed the Excellium DID 5W40 and the Solaris LSX 5W30 to Total Quartz INEO MC3 5w30. This is the oil I am currently using (winter) and it meets BMW LL04. Here is a spec sheet

As for Total Quartz Racing 10W 50, I plan on using that oil during the summer when I race at the track. It is not BMW LL01/04 approved, but it meets BMW API SM/CF. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234414 I know the viscosity is off, but at 240 deg F, the viscosity should be the same as any 5W 30 at normal temp. Its what suites your AZ climate:

SO this oil,

which is made in the US, is described as "FULL" synthetic (by a US legal loop hole), and therefore is mineral oil based, and would be called "Synthetic Technology" in europe.

While this oil

is made in Germany, and has a synthetic base stock, and is using the term "FULLY" synthetic!

So using this logic, we can better analyze TOTAL's labeling:

Only Total Quartz 0W 30 and the two Quartz 7000 products are synthetic based oils. The rest are mineral based oils. So, sorry AlanAZ, please use the Total Quartz 7000 10W 40/15W 50, for hot weather
