oil change with 0w-40 and car is running hotter? - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

i just did a oil change on my 2008 335i. last oil change was at 13,000 miles. this oil change was done at 19990 miles. last oil change used bmw oil this oil change i used 6.5 quarts of mobil 1 0w-40 with a fram oil filter. after driving it today it appears the car is running hotter. before the car would always stay 1 bar before the 250 mark but today it was running between the mark before 250 and 250. at times on the 250 mark. theres no change in my driving habits ive been driving it the same way just as before the oil change. anyone experience this?

The 40 weight oil is making your engine work harder to pump the oil. 0w-40 seems a bit excessive for San Fran. Not sure it ever gets to -40 there.

I always stick with OEM filters. Does anyone else have experience with this filter? Perhaps it restricting oil flow, that would make it run hotter.

that makes sense i guess. the 0w-40 was the only ll-01 oil i found at my local kragens. i didnt think it would have a problem since it was ll-01. it never gets to -30 here either. am i missing something here? i hvnt really been checking up on here for the pasts few months.

he means you shouldve used 0-30w instead of 0-40w...
the second number means the viscosity of the oil in hot temp, which may be too thick causing the heat (however this may be wrong because you switch oil filters too) can't really say what is causing what when you switched 2 items that maybe causing it.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is LL01 approved and is commonly used in BMWs with excellent results.

Any 5W-30 that is LL01 approved is going to be almost a 5W-40 anyway, since the spec in effect straddles the 30/40 divide. On the other hand most of the 5W-30 oils that you buy in the United States are too thin for this application, being almost 5W-20. People don't seem to realize that SAE 30 is a range, not a hard number.

But the Fram filter.... well, when they given them away with oil specials I leave them on the counter. But that is just me.

fram's filters are complete crap. cut one open and compare to OEM. why risk it? just order an oil change kit from tischer and be safe.

I second that. You can replace the filter without dumping the oil, and then see if the temp goes down.

ps. prime the new filter with oil before you install it. And ensure the new O-rings are correctly in place.

In a hot climate, you want a heavier weight oil, ie. 0W40, 5W40

I dont think its the 40w. Infact its probably better as it wont shear like the 30w and come out in the turbo seals.

I guess my money would be on the filter in this instance, because I know plenty n54 engines on 0-40w.

I'd also add another half quart of oil. 7 total. I did on my car personally and have yet to see the MAX indicator on the oil.

There is such thing as too much oil, but I would like to have the most as possible, more oil to cool.
