Cold Temp Warning at 37 Degrees?

It got to about 37 degrees tonight and I got a low outside temp warning...

wtf?

37 isn't that cold...

What happens to you guys who live in parts of the world (and country) where it's colder than that on a regular basis?

I thought it would be good for the car's turbos to have it be cold...

I was a bit surprised to say the least..

All it is doing is alerting you to possible icy conditions.

The vehicle measures the temperature at the level of the vehicle. Temperature aloft (hundreds or thousands of feet above the vehicle) could be below freezing so frozen precipitation could pass through the warmer pocket of surface air and present itself on the road surface. Also, after weeks of freezing temperatures, the road surface (especially bridges) may be below 32 degrees and rain can freeze after contact with the road. A combination below-freezing temperatures aloft and on the road surface can be very hazardous if any precipitation is introduced. I'd imagine that 38 degrees (1 degree above the warning) is an arbitrary point decided upon by meteorologists and BMW lawyers that should clear the driver from a high percentage of weather-related issues on the road.

manual

manual page 69 (at least in mine):

Outside temperature warning
When the displayed temperature sinks to
approx. +37F/+3C, a signal sounds and a
warning lamp lights up. There is an increased
risk of black ice.
Black ice can also form at temperatures
above +37F/+3C. You should therefore
drive carefully on bridges and shaded
roads, for example, otherwise there is an
increased risk of an accident.<

Glad to see someone else around here actually reads the owners manual.

it is an alert for black ice conditions as they can appear long before things start freezing solid or you expect.....

that is all

Why does this continue to generate new threads? BMW has had this feature for over 30 years. My 87 325is had it. If you live in a climate with freezing temperatures, it is very useful. Bridges and other surfaces can get quite slick at these temps and below.

Audi has the same thing also. I wouldn't be surprised if MB did, too.

Yup, it goes off on a regular basis, you just get used to it after a while. I just give a glance and forget about it. I usually don't remember about it during the summer months, and it surprises me the first time in the season, but just that once. I'd rather have it than not have it.
