Z4 35is -> 2011 335is?

There's been a whole lot of speculation whether the higher output engine in the newly announced Z4 35is will be made available for the 2011 335. Perhaps it's not what we are hearing that is a sign that the new engine will be made available for the 335. All the major car mags have reported about the Z4 35is but not one, not even C&D, have speculated about the new mill being placed in the 335. That's probably because BMW is offering inside access to the car mags about the new engine in exchange for keeping quiet about whether it will or will not be spread across other models although we already know a slightly lower output variant will be offered in the 740i and Li, TT-I6 producing 315 hp at 5,800 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque. Perhaps an announcement will be made at the upcoming Detroit auto show next month regarding the 335 or shortly thereafter.

I dunno man, the whole thing is pretty suspicious. I can only say one thing, when I see camouflaged cars being tested it usually means their arrival is pretty close. What I am getting at is that the next gen 3 might be closer than all of us think. In that case the "2011" might end up being F30 3-series.

how was the case in the past? Were E90 engines (naturally aspirated) present in top end version of the Z4? I don't know, i remember the 3.0Si Z4 had some 265hp. If this is what the then top end 330i had, logic says you will get the same unit in the 335. Only it's a turbo, so BMW may play ECU tricks and position the Z4 a bit higher than 335 considering it's an upmarket, lower volume sports car vs mass market family sedan that the 3 series is. Then again, may be it's not necessary since same engine in both cars will still make the lighter Z4 into a faster car. So my guess you will get the same engine in 335i or whatever the top end non M 3 series model will be (sans special projects like expected Tii range).

small disclaimer: I'm talking about Euro engines, I'm not sure if in US they will choke them or not.

Interesting theory, but I'd have to say the odds of that happening are slim to none.

In one of the more recent models the X1, the spy photos of the car being winter tested appeared around 1st week of January, then X1 was introduced as a 2010 model

Now it's about January 2010... so...

I would love if this were true. I expect to see some significant changes to the 2011 3-series, but I just don't see how they could get the F30 released so quickly without some info being leaked about it at some point. Could be possible though, that the 2011 F30 sedan is introduced, and the 2011 e92 receives some major upgrades and then switches to the new platform next year.

We had that same discussion already about two weeks ago: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331201

And it's not a new engine. It's still the same N54, BMW only cranked up the boost and designed a slightly different intake (which again isn't really part of the engine).

It's probable that we'll see this engine in the future 3 series, maybe as a 340i, above the 330i that will get the N55 with a single turbo, and as a competitor to the Audi S4 yet below the new M3 / RS4.

BMW X1 as a 2010 I don't think so. Have you looked on the website. They don't even have it listed as a "future vehicle" yet (as a of Dec.29, 2009). As a matter of fact, here is a link stating that it is a 2011 model with introduction to the market sometime in 2010.

http://www.leftlanenews.com/bmw-x1.html

Also, the X1 was undergoing testing in camo back in the summer of 2008...here is jalopnik and look at the first blog responses dated July 2008.

http://jalopnik.com/398269/2010-bmw-...auseating-camo

So, I would NOT assume that because there is a 3 series udergoing winter testing that we would have a new one out this year. BMW is pretty disciplined with their 7 year product cycle.

Also, we need to keep in mind that the Z4 35is is their "range topper" and the result of NOT bringing an M version to market.

I would be shocked if BMW upgraded the current generation 335i to match the hp of the z4 range topper, since they have its own range topper and that of course is the M3.

I would look for the "is" designation and the HP increase on the next generation F30...we just have to wait a year and a half for the sedan and 2.5 years for the coupe.

I know you think the world revolves around US but I am talking globally. There is a 2010 X1 model just google it. The new 3er may not necessarily be here in US as 2011 but that's beside the point.

So bottom line, Jan 09 saw X1 winter tested, it arrived as a 2010 model, now Jan 10 we see 3er winter tested, could be a 2011 model in UK 1st probably. As there is an 2005 E90 in UK but US models started in 06.

Gotcha... I was wondering why they are taking so long to bring this to market. Well, at least its out in Europe.

...and as a matter of fact, the automotive world does revolve around the US. Take a look at some sales figures.
