Can 2nd Hand BMW owners extend the BMW warranty/maintenance???

I thought i heard something a little while ago that bmw now allows owners who bought their cars second hand, are now able to be warrantied through BMW instead of going to a third party. Is this true? Am i not understanding it? I still have a while till i need to worry about it fully but I wanted to make sure I have my facts straight before I start thinking about my options. I bought my car from a non-bmw dealership and it currently is still under its 50k and 4 year mark.

Thanks for your help
Alex

You may want to check with your local dealer, however I know that a warranty CAN be purchased at anytime ......... just not sure about the requirements of purchasing it thru BMW.

It shouldn't matter since the majority of the extended warranties are offered thru some type of third party anyway.

As far as I know, you can get the maitenence extended at any time but not the warranty...this may have changed. If it did, it was not long ago.

I am in a similar situation. I have an 07 with 13k miles and next September my warranty is up. I called my local BMW dealership and they asked for the last 7 digits of my VIN and told me what my options were going to be. They told me that I would be able to extend both my warranty and maintenance. Hope this helps.

How long ago was this? Did they give you ~price on warranty? Was it BMW warranty and NOT 3rd party?

I have an 08 550 that I purchased used from a non-BMW dealer. I currently have 43000 miles on it. I can extend the MAINTENANCE warranty from BMW--which would cost $2295 if I purchased it today, but it will only last 6 years from the date my car was put into service, which was July 07--so only until July 2013. If I buy the Maintenance warranty in July 2010 before my 50,000 mile warranty runs out, it will only be good for 3 years (2013) or 100,000 miles. I tried to find a 3rd party warranty company that covers maintenance, but it was impossible. I also called several dealers in different states and they all quoted me the same price for the extended maintenance, so I'm not sure why others on this forum said they negotiated with the dealer.

As for the SERVICE warranty, the BMW dealer did give me a quote, but it was quite high. I shopped around and the best one I found was Alpha Warranty thru CarChex. Prices are less if you purchase them before your original warranty is up. After that--they go way up from what I understand.

Were you the original owner? I think there is a difference between your options if you are the first owner as opposed to if you are the second or more

I was told the extended maintenance on my car would run $2500 and you have to take this option before your 4yr/50k free maintenance runs out.

I already get extended warranty through CPO for rest so no worries on that part. Only decision is to figure out if changing oil every 8-12k, new wiper blades once a year, and brake pads every two years will be worth $2500 rather than saving money and doing it myself.

I believe the only way to get BMW warranty is through CPO, which runs about $2000 to $2500. But your car better has factory FRT with over 50% tread left. Else they require you to replace the whole set of tires before they CPO your car.

From what I've read all 3rd party warranties are junk. You have to get approval from them BEFORE doing any work. And they have the right to deny your claim.

This is exactly what I want.. but can I get it if im not the ORIGINAL owner? Ive heard a lot of nightmares about all the 3rd party warranties and I just want to extend the factory warranty I have now.

Like I said earlier, when I was at dealer last, earlier this year (May?), you had to be the original owner of the car to get the ext warranty, but maintenance you can get ext'd anytime before your warranty is out

Why not just call the dealer to find out? They make money on CPO'ing a car. I don't see why they would limit to original owners.
