I think that this model was created to compete with the s4. I dont think bmw likes to lose comparison tests. So they threw the performance exhaust and tune on there, added a badge and black chrome tips and market it towards the enthusiast crowd.
I would have gotten this model if it was out at the time but it wasnt so...... jb3 tuned cars are better!

ya my thoughts exactly - i would think the tunes will still work (maybe need some tweaking, but still easier than the n55)
so just consider this BMWs cooling package our engines deserved in the first place

I thought this model comes with the bmw performance software? I didnt think that the tunes could work safely on that?

I'm not a tuner though; it would be interesting to see Vishnu and BMS comment on this... Nick Last edited by Nick.CBR; 01-14-2010 at 12:10 AM. Reason: dme |

Doesn't do away completely with throttle body...the TB is still there to close during emergency (limp mode)...but during normal operation, all control of air into the cylinders is from the valvetronic actuated valve lift.

ya n55 is a different animal completely - i know weve got the best tuners in the world on this forum but this will be a challenge for them on a whole new level

I just believe the new N55 will be as non-tunable as the other BMW naturally aspirated engines like the N52 by using piggybacks. Very little power can be extracted out of it because the ECU will be aware of signal altering. But with a flash, I think it will be tunable. And I haven't seen an un-breakable software system yet, I suppose flashes will come about 3 months after the launch...

Good point...I dont know what the exact drivetrain loss is either...but you are probably right, its probably not as much as 70 hp. Probably more like 10-15%? If it was 15% and the new 335is is a true 322 bhp (and not underrated by BMW), that is about 270whp. If it is underrated, maybe there's 310whp or in that neighborhood? That would be my best guess...I'm sure that's enough more power to feel good in the seat.

This was the same with my previous 997 turbo. Porsche advertised the increased torque but did not mention that mid-range HP was increased; probably because the total HP was not. |

Claimed engine crank hp and dynoed WHP are entirely different things; as we all know. With that said, arguably the new engine would produce more WHP than its predecessor. Unless of course BMW chose to over-rate the N54 and accurately rate the N55. Time will tell the facts of course. I find it hard to believe that the new engine will not produce more real power. |

Interesting, the 313s are 19"s but that release clearly says 18"s, in the past I thought when they had identical wheels in different sizes they each got a distinct "style number". They will still look fantastic in 18"s (and be a bit more practical for our POS Pennsylvania roads).

^ Not even close on that one. + LSD, close to 100 more hp, superior suspension and structual integrity, better brakes, far better quality of leather, better stereo, and on... It's almost like saying that a GT3 is "basically" a C2S. |

Only will buy if it comes in xDrive. I can get the performance package for my 335, and be similar to it in performance. I'll have a decision when my lease is up...
