N55 Tuning? What can be done?

As the 2010+ 335 will have the new N55 engine, what sort of tuning can be done to it? Will existing mods such as Intercoolers, BOVs, intakes and cat-backs be universal between the N54 and N55?

Kinda frustrated because all the research I've done regarding tuning my car, once it arrives, could be just a big waste of time now that I'm informed it will have the N55 motor. I'm actually pretty pissed.

i highly doubt much of anything will be cross compatible. the N55 is significantly different from everything i have read. you are just going to have to wait awhile. slowly, but surely stuff will come out for it.

from what i hear the N55 is going to be alot harder to tune, bmw isnt going to make the same mistake they did with the N54, putting it out there and then addeding a new ecu and software to stop tuning. ( software 29.2+ and MSD81 DME/ECU) They are going to go hard from the bat for anti-tuning, and tuner codes.

As for power, anti-tuning things bmw will put into the engine might limit the amount of power tuners can extract from the engine possibly.

Of course valvetronic is going to be a PITA to tune, and by the time this engine is even where te N54 is, its going to be a god 2 years.

I think the bottom line is the N54 tuned, will make more power than the N55 will. Of course this is speculation, but it has been hinted by tuners and other good sources.

V4, Jb3 2.0, etc. have come so far in 3 years.

There is going to be a significant lag from release for a lot of aftermarket parts as its a new platform. Look how long it has taken to get where we are with the N54.. and we are still improving and evolving

It would be nice for BMW to allow tuning, but in such a way that they would catch all tunes with the improved software and just void the warranty...so people can choose if they want to tune and lose the warrany, or if they don't want to tune and keep the warranty

However, the BMW Performance chief said that they are working at a Power Kit for the N55 engine already. So this will probably be your first tune...if you are willing to pay

If people want to tune let 'em just have software that makes BMW aware of this tune so that they can "fairly" void the warranty.

When there's a will, there's a way. I have no doubt with time aftermarket tuners will be able to find loopholes in BMW's anti-tuner defense mechanisms

The bigger question is will the existing tunes namely Proceede, JB3, and GIAC be compatible in some form (different maps etc..) with the N54 based 335 is ??

If that is the case, then for 2011, the Is may be the way to go ... you would be getting better cooling from the factory + all the after market stuff already available

I bet that within a year there will be a gaggle of N55 products out there. It won't take long.

Did you ever see 2 different flashes for 2 different engines being "compatible" ?

Nissan said that the GT-R was "tuner proof" and we all see how that worked out. The hardest part will be dealing with valvetronic. Off the top of my head, you can get around valvetronic by tricking the mass air flow sensor.

The N55 is def going to be cracked and tuned.

The real question is how much power is going to be extracted from it via tuning. More aggressive ecu hardware and software was most def put in the N55 to stop tuning at a limit. The ECU is mounted on the engine! by the intake manifold.

And how much can be tuned that the bmw anti-tuning kicks in to stop the fun.
Like when you trip tuner codes when you push the tune too aggressive, you lose tq and such until you re-start the car or until you trip it again.

BT cable is going to be a 100% must have with no excuses with N55.
