Having my steering column replaced - WTF!
I’ve been getting a slight binding in the steering every now and then. Brought the car in and turns out to be a problem with the steering column. Anyone else have this issue. Dealer was instructed by BMW to replace the column so apparently BMW knows about this issue. My car was built in April 06.
BMW doesn't seem to have much luck with steering components. My X5 needed to have a new rack installed soon after I bought it and I remember all the controversy back in 01 with the E46 steering. My loaner car (07 525Xi with 1100 miles) had really stiff steering when I picked it up yesterday. The guy that drove the car out to me sat in it for a while trying to loosen it up and told me to bring it back if it didn’t get better. Sounds like that car will need some work also. ::

that's not a good sign to see!
when you say 'binding", does your steering wheel stick or something?

Man, I wouldn't let you near any more BMW's if I were them. I don't know what they're thinking giving you a 5'er.. I'd loan you a Chevy Aveo or something for the day so you could ruin that and not another bimmer...

someone else had the same issues as you and had his/her steering column replaced as well. You can do a search on steering column and should find that other member.

Okay! So thats what is wrong with my car too, steering has like small steps in it when turning the wheel. Like missing cogs or something like click click click in the steering. No sound but can be felt. Is this what you mean Has been bothering me for some time already.

Mine feels like it sticks every once in a while but it does not keep clicking like you described.

My brand new 99 MCoupe had the steering column replaced within the 1st few months
It started clanking, took it in and they said "we have to replace it IMMEDIATELY". I figured it was about to break....

Had it erplaced just last week because of the squeak it developed at 10k miles... Seems to me that the Bimmer spits out the car pretty fast and then you spend next 2 years taking the car to the service for SW updates, HW replacements...and they finally get it right. Similarly I read about the 2001 and 2002 M3, and first two years of e46...
Therefore, the 2011 M3 will be mine |

They replace the column and I got the car back but guess what? The problem is still there:mad:
It feels a little different but it still feels like it's sticking. Now what? I don't want to bring the car back until they know how to fix the problem. This is the reason why I almost bought an American car

Car is back at the dealer today. I took a ride with one of their techs and he felt the problem so hopefully they will fix it this time.

when my car was in for service i told them i heard a slight clicking from the steering wheel and they ended up replacing the entire steering column. "faulty steering column" was what they wrote on the service sheet.
