How come this 335is, with essentially an old engine plus some s/w upgrade, optional DCT and performance parts, is getting all the love while there hasn't been much talk about the LCI e92 with the new N55? Shouldn't a spanking new engine deserve more attention?

I disagree on that one; my 2005 E46 had an 'executive' package. Instead of 46500$ with regular packages/options, it was 44500$ MRSP.

I can't argue that. Right now, BMWNA offers a Value Package that is cheaper than some similar equipped regular packages, as well.

However, in this instance, the "s" is kind of a model-within-a-model, not just a package. It's exlusive to North America, and even gets seperate badging from the regular "i". Most importantly, it's a horsepower and torque upgrade. Never inexpensive, and with BMW, never a "blow-out" sale.

In the Z4, the engine makes 335 hp; a more restrictive intake on the 3-series accounts for the 15-hp difference.
I'm surprised why they did that. Wouldn't it be cool that a 335is has 335HP?

Between the seats sits the familiar six-speed manual, but modified here to have shorter throws.

Quote:
The 335is doesn’t exactly threaten the M3 performance-wise, and with a starting price of $50,525, the is coupe costs $8750 less than an M3 coupe. But compared to the M3 sedan, the 335is coupe saves only $5750; faced with that choice, we’d pony up for the four-door M3.
Motortrend:

The mission of this North America-only model is to cut the factory in on some of the action BMW owners have been giving companies like Dinan, Hartge, AC Schnitzer, et al. in search of a bit more performance and exclusivity. Indeed the added power is largely derived in the same way those guys often make it -- with a hotter chip that turns up the boost (from 8.7 psi in the 2009 335i to 11.6 psi nominal peak). As for the aforementioned overboost of up to 14.5 psi, this only happens for a maximum of seven seconds, generally below 4500 rpm, so the horsepower never tops 320

+1. If you can swing it, get the M3 (unless fuel economy is a huge concern to you). I almost got a 335 but ended up in an M3 and couldn't be happier. No offense to you 335 guys; it's an incredible car but once you go M, it's hard to look back.

As for insurance concerns, the increase was not substantial at all for me (age 30 w/clean record except for a minor at-fault accident in 2008). Yes, I have the sedan, but before I got it I also got insurance quotes on the coupe and they were only a couple dollars a month more than the sedan.

If they would of upgraded the brakes and done something to the suspension that was above and beyond the standard 335i sport suspension, this car would be a hit.
As it stands, it's a body kit, catback exhaust, a few mods and very mild tune for thousands more.
I'm also wondering if the "sport" exhaust is simply the regular 335i with the "Golf Tee" or "butterfly valve" mod?

The upgraded water and oil cooler is something they should of put on the 335i when they made the March 2007 production model changes.

The only real thing this car offers that you can't do on a regular 335i is the DCT, and you have to pay a couple grand extra for that.

So this 335is is $3,750 more than the 335i to start and with the DCT it would be about $4,500 more than a 335i with 6AT, is that correct?

If so, a 335i with $4,500 in mods will spank this 335is up and down the street, track and strip.

Again, if they would of spiced up the suspension a bit over the standar sport suspension and given the 335is better brakes (at least higher performance pads, lines and fluid) for the same $3.750 price increase, I think it would be worth it.

Rear: Looks good. I'd say perfect.

Front: Looks good

Instrument panel with "335is" logo: I like

Dashboard trim Logo "335is": Welcome back the to '70 and '80s when we saw crap like, "Brougham", "Century", "Country Squire", and "GT" in the same spot. Tacky is definitely the right word here.

Rims: I've seen better, I've seen worse. I could take or leave them.

Side Mirrors: Please, BMW. Find your Napa Auto Parts receipt, and return these god-awful ugly things. Every "s" side mirror has to be black? Let's get some body-colored mirrors on here instead, and pretend we have upscale image in North America.

Did you also notice the "335is" under the side turn signals too? That's so fuggin stupid and makes a nice car look cheap.

Also, I think the price is too steep for what you get. If I got the 335i I could at least sell the old bumpers to recoup some of the cost of getting the kit. A tuned 335i would kill the 335is hands down. This whole thing is a huge disappointment. I have better ways to spend my $$$.

Does anyone else think the 335is badge looks misplaced? I know there is limited space back there, but I'd de-badge this biatch.

I like the way the 335iS looks. Significantly better than standard LCI coupe IMO. But I don't like these details either.

It's absolutely heinous! I HATE that. I already know what I'm driving, thank you. M cars, fine. But this thing should NOT have this nonsense. Save that for the ricers. I hope you can get normal dark poplar or something other than that cheesy gray stuff with the badges. I totally hate they don't have the ashtray door and I don't like all the blank space below the iDrive buttons.

That beef said, this thing is AWESOME. For better or worse the price was about what I expected. Too bad it's actually true - I was hoping for under 50 base but you do get a lot with the iS.

A little annoyed they don't get fog lights but I hardly use mine as it is so I guess that's fine. I need to see the exhaust closer up - it reads like it's sexy as hell. Too bad the wheels aren't 19's but I think I would just put my M6 reps on right away.

DCT would be a must for me. That's a much bigger deal then the extra power and "over boost" as these should be tune friendly so on goes the v4 or JB3.

I already e-mailed my sales guy about this; we'll see how things shake out. I really want to do ED again on a black/black one loaded to the nuts (besides active steering - lol).
