335i Coupe 155 MPH

Finally getting this off my camera. Did this on 10/5/06 on the way from Venice to Salzberg.

Was killer!! Finally got over 1200 miles on the car and decided to wind it out. My wife got out her camera and I told her to start taking pictures when we got over 150. We were cruising at this speed for about 5 to 10 minutes before she took this last pic. Notice the temp gage. 240 on the dot. The car ran this temp the entire trip once it got warmed up. We put 1400 miles on the car in 2 weeks. Got a great story about it too when we zipped past two Italian police men with a laser speed gun. At 155.

We started in Munich, drove to Lake Como, Italy, then to Barolo, IT, Santa Marghrita, IT, Pisa, Florence, Siena, Venice, Salzburg, Austria, and back to Munich.

Also passed a pair of these before they decided to blow me off. OF course this was not when I was doing 155. This was still during the break in period so I didn't go over 100.

Have alot more pics of the trip, but don't want to bore you all.

Had a great time and the car was perfect.

Perfect.

Did you take European Delivery on your wife too? Just the thought of my girlfriend operating a digital camera at any speed over 80mph makes me simultaneously laugh and quake with fear. 155.... no more girlfriend. 240 you say?

Hey, looks more like 'only' 152/153mph to me..... Only joking, good pics and post! (But I'll be more impressed when I see the needle OFF THE F****** DIAL - like overlapping the full mark on the fuel gauge - when you've got a few thousand miles up!!)

I just crunched some numbers, and concluded that you could have gotten better fuel economy had you have kept it around 148 mph....kidding! Nice to hear the car can do well at those speeds. Seems like it'd be a blast to try it over there...

When I was a kid I was fearless, took a car up to 145 in NYS and got caught...not a good experience for someone 21 yrs. old. That's the last time I ever did anything near that speed, and that was let's just say more than 1 but less than 2 decades ago....hehe

In the last 5 years I did around 118 in my current car, but that's it. Seriously, I hope the new car doesn't encourage me to speed, I'll return it if it does such....NOT!

Cool; sounds like we passed eachother on ED pickups. We did Munich, Salzburg, Zel Am See, Cortina, Venice, Sienna, Florence, Mittenwald, Nurenburg, Munich. Highest I hit was about 155mph too, and a guy in a Cerrera GT still blew past me.

(fwiw, highest my temp guage ever got was 260f, on the ring).

Glad you enjoyed it.

Great pictures. I've been at similar speeds in an E46 M3 on the autobahn. It feels very quick.

That is probably a 360 Challenge Stradale, which is a stripped out, lightweight version of the 360.

So, we were driving from Venice, Italy to Salzburg, Austria on the last leg of our trip. It's about a 4 to 5 hour drive going through some very flat parts of Italy as you approach the Alps. We had just passed 1200 miles on the odometer and I decided this would probably be the best place to push the car to 155 mph since once we got in the Alps we probably wouldn't have a straight stretch of road.

I waited until we pass the "no speed limit" sign and started winding up the car on a straight stretch. That car got to 130 mph so fast it wasn't even funny. My wife doesn't like to drive fast but even she was kinda hooting a bit as we went. Cars where falling past us on the right side of the road that they just looked like blurs going past. We hit 155 and the car started governing and we were losing power here and there as the gas was being shut off to the engine. My wife had her Canon 30D out and took some pics of the speedo reading 150+ mph.

We cruised there for a few minutes and the car felt just like it did at 100 mph. I looked up and noticed two Italian policemen by their car on the side of the road. We hadn't passed any police before that in the first 1200 miles.

Zero... None....

Now while I'm doing 155 there are two of them...

And they had a laser speed detector...

CRAP!!!

Did I miss a speed limit sign and not realize it as I was flying at 155 mph??? Most speed limit signs in Europe on Autobahns are 100 to 120 Kph (not mph, thats about 60 to 70 mph.) and i'm doing twice that!!! Crap!! They are going to pull me over and impound my car and take my wife and I to jail... Italian Goulag!! All these things are flying through my mind as we approach these two policemen... I think about slowing down but at this point what is the point?? I'm doing 155 MPH !!!!!!

When we are about even with them and my wife and I are shitting our pants... I'm expecting alot of hand waving and gestering to pull over... but instead they raiser their fists in the air and CHEER!!! :rocks:

Man they must have been bored....

K

PS. I'll post more pics when I can get a chance to downsize some more.

Did your wife take their (caribineri) picture?

Before I die I want to take Vishnu's set-up to Euro and surprise a few Porsches.

Great trip, we just missed each other!

+1

I might toss Serbia, the France/Spain Pyrennes border area, and the Adriatic coast into that mix. And if we're willing to shift continents, parts of Chile are even more spectacular.

No. We didn't think about it until later. We were both stunned at what happened.

Great write up about ED. I guess I'll have to put something together. But trying to fit 2 weeks of fun and amazement might be a challenge.

Man, I swear we must have been in the same place at the same time. I think I saw those same two cops give a thumbsup to a 430 that went by at god knows what speed. Too funny.

FWIW, I agree that southern austria is absolutely amazing. Driving over grossglockner was breathtaking.

Oh hey, Stressdoc - did you go to Mittenwald? I saw a North American blue 335i sedan parked there, and wondered whose it was.
