That is pretty cool... always loved the convertable hardtop idea, except for the lack of trunk space. Anyone know the failure rates of those things in past cars? I would imagine with so many seperate motors having to coordinate all those parts, it's bound to go bad sometime or another...

I like the hard top versus the soft but lack of any trunk space can be a concern if there are more than just 2 people.

Thevideo shows the trunk space. Its relatively big. And with the top down you still have 60% of the original space, plus those rear seats fold down.

I wonder if it has a sensor to prevent it from activating (up or down) while the vehicle is in motion. Otherwise the first time that baby moves with the wind it will be gone with the wind. And I don't think the driver will be reciting the Rhett Butler line, either.

looks amazing. My dads last car was an SC430 hardtop convert and I love the concept. That new E92 convert is sweet that you can open it from the key fob.

This hard top concept works exactly the same as my MB SLK.

There is a sensor, see in the veido where the guy pull out a hard plastic cover from the trunk, this is the sensor.

If this covers is not engage, the roof will not open.
Therefore, you can put more things inside the trunk with the roof close.

When the cover is pull out, the roof will rest on top of the cover to prevent from scratches.

Another thing with the Mercedes is that the car must be at stop position in order to close or open the roof, otherwise won't work, I guess maybe they think the wind will blow the roof away???

I drove around top of the line Peugeot 307cc folding hardtop for a couple weeks in Europe and found it very annoying that you lose most of your useful trunk space with that mechanism. It worked perfectly in that car, but if I had one here, I'd never have the top down and would always be annoyed about losing my trunk. You end up (like the guy in the video) with your suitcases in the back seat most of the time.

Edit: I should also add that folding roofs like this are quite a spectacle, and people will be staring at you whenever you operate it.

I dont get the trunk agruments. When I had my hardtop down I would put my stuff in the back seat. its alot easier to get to just to reach in and out. Also ...what THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS HAULING AROUND IN YOUR CARS?

It's hydraulics and solenoids, not electric motors that move those parts around. It's no different than retractable landing gear on an airplane... It just requires a good system to keep everything coordinated.
