After 50,000 miles - how much do you pay for maintenance?

How much do you pay your dealer for maintenance after 50,000 miles?

And what happens if you don't hit the 45,000 mile mark in 4 years? Does that mean you don't get the free maintenance at 45,000 miles ????

Your warranty and free maintenance expires at 4 years or 50,000 miles from in-service date. Whichever is first.

This. It's 2-3k well spent. You might never use it, or you might have some catastrophe of a failure and only have to pay the $50 deductible. My way of thinking is that my car has turbos, injectors etc that have been known to fail or need replacement, and I'd rather pay $2k right now instead of 6k+ down the road.

Plus there's added resale value etc.......

He's asking about maintenance costs.

Extended warranty doesn't pay for maintenance.

I have the extended warranty to 6 yrs 100,000 miles. I'm asking about Maintenance cost. Will BMW for example do the free maintainence at 42,000 miles, for example when you hit 3 years 11 months 29 days ?

Or do you have to wait for 45,000 miles? But if you wait for 45,000 miles, you may hit the 4 year mark. And so, no more free maintenance ????

again .. maintenance cost (change oil, filter, etc) is very different from warranty coverage (when you blow a headlight, etc).

If its within 4 years and under 50,000 miles, yes. Only if you car calls for it though. You can't bring it in and demand they do maintenance on the last day before your warranty ends if your car doesn't say it needs service.

Oil changes/service are supposed to be performed as they come along, and if close enough to the mark will be done by BMW. It doesn't have to "need" the service, necessarily.

Each oil change is around $140 at the dealer. So, a good amount of money. The 30/60/90k vehicle check up was $287. Brakes are something around $800 for front + similar for rear. 100k is the expensive one, with my dealer telling me it will be something like $1200-1500.

Good luck!

Find a tame mechanic, buy the manual and buy some basic tools.

I don't take a car to the dealer after the warranty is over if I can possibly avoid it.

This is good advice. It's simple to change fluids, filters, spark plugs, disc brake pads, etc., with a few simple tools and a repair manual (or Internet DIY advice). The money you'll save the first time you DIY will more than pay for the metric tools, ramps, and other equipment you'll need to perform basic maintenance on your car(s).

None with the extended Service plan. My problem is that I have the extended plan, and in 3 years, I have only driven 43k miles, with about 20k miles of that coming between year 1 and 2 of ownership.

I really need to take my car more than my wifes on road trips to put on miles, and make the plan worthwhile.

Thanks!

Has anyone brought in their own oil (Mobil One, for example) .. If you have your own oil, what's the charge for labor and oil filter ???

And do you change your oil mid-way ? 7,500 ... 22,500 .... 37,500 ???

My cousin never took his M3 to the dealership, only indy shops, and the bills still totaled to over 20k in 8 years! On my Nissan, the exhaust breaking pushed my maintenance to about $2500 in 12 years! LOL

I am in your shoes, even worse. My car is 38 mos. old and has only 17.4k. I need to reach 26k for front brakes and 28k for plugs, and plan on doing it. The reality is, how? I need a couple 1000 mile trips--since I got my software updated, the car has never died, so maybe it will be fine.

I do now realize why people said there's no purpose to keeping the mileage low on a BMW. But, I think my low miles could benefit IF/WHEN I pay for a 7/100 extended warranty--even though the warranty price is steep, I will be able to truly enjoy years 5,6,7 and drive all over the place.

It's all up to the car. If the CBS doesn't say it needs it, the dealer won't get paid for doing it.

But the CBS does have some leeway and will tell the dealer that something is coming up, and have them perform it even though the car hasn't given you a warning to bring it in for maintenance. For example, my car said I would need a brake fluid flush 03/2010. I brought it in for warranty work in 11/2009 and they performed the fluid flush because the car told them to, even though the car hasn't told me to bring it in yet.

While it is under warranty you get a free oil change once a year if the car says you need one or not. So you should get 4 oil changes in the warranty period.

Be sure you are buying the appropriate, as there is WARRANTY increase and then there is routine MAINTENANCE increase.

Oh, and the $400 battery is NOT covered under maintenance. . .
