Can our Canadian friends suggest any great, fun roads that can accommodate safe, fast driving without fear of jail time? We have Montana, but they even adopted a speed limit.

there are none that I know of, max speed in Canada is 100km/h (62mph), in Quebec they usually tolerate speed till 118km/h, past that you take chances, get caught over 200km/h and you loose your driving license

Max official limit that I've seen in Alberta is 110 km/h.
120 km/h is usually well tolerated. Anything above that have to be carefull.

With radar detectors illegal in about or over half the country and low speed limits, I never go over 110 km/h on the highway.

But as for roads, there were none where I lived.

You can find some nice stretch of roads in Canada, but unfortuntaly when they are nice, well paved, well designed (banking or road texture) and well maintained ... they are full of enforcement and safety crew

On top of it; in Quebec ... they drive nothing better than some bad ass motorcycles.

So we have to keep it under 120Km/h

The BMW Fascination I Driver Training course @ Mont Tremblant* (North of Montreal) in Quebec. The drive up there on public roads is very scenic.

Speed limit in Ontario is 100km/h on 400 series highways but most people go about 120 km/h and the police will usually tolerate it. I usually go about 130 km/h on average. I don't know of any good stretches of hwy in the Toronto area where you can open up your car without taking a risk on a huge fine. The only thing I can say is our highways and very well maintained...no need to worry about potholes. On a side note radar/laser detectors are illegal. My cousin visited from NJ 2 weeks ago and got stopped for having one and his was confiscated by the popo.

You can still stay under 100km/h and still have fun.

Think curvy, banked, mountainous roads.
Some sections are even more exciting due to the presence of a steep cliff on one side!

Like the Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver, BC to Whistler.
(Although you have to watch out for the construction in preparation for the 2010 winter olympics.)

This better not be incriminating... The most I've managed on a bright sunny day is between Toronto and Ottawa on the 401 at around 170km/h max. Infact I've seen cars pass me while doing that speed, the beauty of that stretch is that it's totally straight and alot of sections have absolutely no place for law enforcement to hide as long as you're looking at the horizon and paying attention. I didn't/don't do it for kicks, the reason is quite simply that there are always other cars doing that pace which I tag along behind and that it's an otherwise horribly boring drive.

Within the city though if it's the 401 I keep it below 120, and the 407 below 140, just going with the flow...

But to the OP, sorry you'd be out of luck, there are no truly "great, fun roads that can accommodate safe, fast driving without fear of jail time" here in Canada that I'm aware of. Visor looks to have some good advice though.

If I still lived in Manitoba, I would have bought another 325i, but the people drive so fast on the 400 hwys in Ontario. It's not uncommon to get in a 140-50 km/h caravan on the 407 and 120-40 km/h on the 401/03 or QEW, but it's not really fun, because it's straight and traffic filled. I was driving 150 with about 8 other cars on the 407 when a ghost car flew up behind me. We all moved over one lane and let him pass.

The real fun for me is in the narrow side roads in the Halton region where you quite frequently have to slow down to 20km/h on a bend.

I have been looking forward to the sea to sky for a while. Just have to talk my brothers in Seattle and Eugene into a road trip.

I remember the fast groups btw Toronto & Hamilton cruising close to 140kph.

Where did you live in Manitoba? I used to live in Winnipeg...

The roads in the city are rather bad, but the highways aren't AS bad.

We gave up owning sportier (and smaller) cars because you can only drive them for a few months and the roads aren't great, but our old 740iL and and S420 were great there.

If you travel up to southern BC, take Highway 1 east from Vancouver to Hope. I would then suggest the Coquihalla (Highway #5) from Hope (about 150 km east of Vancouver) to Merritt, then swing east toward Lake Okanagan. The speed limit is 110km/h, but you can safely cruise @ 120+. If cruising above this speed, you should keep a keen eye out for the RCMP !
This is a very scenic route that reaches altitudes of 1700m +. From now until the late spring, you should be prepared for some snow or snow showers on this route. If you head east from Merritt to Lake Okanagan, take Highway 97 south through Penticton, then southeast via the Hope-Princeton Highway ( a really fun mountain trip) back to Hope and then return to Vancouver via Highway 1. This circle trip is about 950 kms in length; total driving time about 10 - 10.5 hours depending on weather and traffic. If you carry a radar detector, it is not illegal in BC, but you should should be prepared to hide this incriminating evidence in the event of an unplanned stop !

Ah ah, I took this same route only once in my life and did had a trip, first it was winter, second I was stuck in Richmond for two days because the #5 was close after some 3.5 meters of snow falls, anyway after the highway reopened it was for sure scenic but for different reasons, I would love to do these roads again but in summer this time...

looks like highway 40 or 93? I like taking Highway 93 between banff and radium... amazing twisties, lots of fun, not too much law around (still gotta be careful of them though!)

heya-

dereks mentioned the coquihala (van-kelowna) route as well as the hope-princeton... both are good fun,... real good fun. we travel that route (hwy 3 - crow's nest hyw / hope-princeton) a few times a year, and honestly, it's probably the most fun drive within 3 hours of vancouver. the sea-to-sky / hyw 99 to whistler is soo congested and under-construction most of the time, that it's usually spent stuck behind a semi or camper van.

i'm not going to incriminate myself, but you can get above the posted speed easily and stay there on both highways, and the #3 route is by far the twistiest. will see if i can dig up any photos from past trips... only thing to worry about, and it's getting that way already, is snow. you're up over 1500m on some parts, and alpine weather is definately a factor.
