HOW TO: Change DVD Sat Nav drive on the BMW E90 320d

Well last year my Sat Nav stopped recognising the DVD disks, so I had no navi.

I got it into BMW who said the DVD drive had failed and it needed changing and priced it up at 600!! For that much I could get a much better aftermarket alternative! So decided to see if I could get the part and do it myself for cheaper.

I found the part number and purchased the drive for 380, with some discount.

It arrived on Friday in this blue box.

So the tools needed are some trim removal tools, a philips screwdriver and T8 and T6 for the torx screws.

So first thing to do is to partially remove the main trim piece, this is so that the climate control panel can be removed.

Now remove the climate control panel

Once that is removed, you can then remove the trim piece covering the DVD and CD drive with the trim removal tools

You then have access to the cover which has the eject buttons etc on it, this is held in place by two screws, so remove them.

So this is what you are faced with

Now at this point I realised that the DVD drive was not clipped it but screwed in, so the unit had to come out, there are four screws and once these are out the unit simply slides out.
I didnt remove the unit completely as I wanted to do this as simply as possible, so I removed the two screws at the top of the unit and this enabled me to remove the top plate.

Once the top plate is removed you can then unscrew and remove the CD drive, and then underneath remove the two screws which mean the DVD drive slides out.

Unclip the things attached to the DVD drive and then remove it.

Fit the new drive and screw it back in place and then screw the CD player back in place and pop a Navi disk in to make sure it works.

Then reverse the whole process to put the car back to normal.

As now you have a working Navi again.

This took me about an hour to do, and not having done anything like this before I found it to be pretty straightforward.

Saved me 220 on the BMW quote

Cheers guys.

Cant believe BMW wanted 220 on top of the part price to do this! For them I am sure it would have taken no more then 30 mins, in fact I reckon I could do it quicker then that now!

+1 Thanks for the great how to guide.

Where did you get the trim removal tools from - my centre Alu trim needs a high tech fix (i.e. BluTak) to stop a rattle (dealer failed at fixing already)

Great result, but 380 for the part is obscene in itself.

Hi Mud,

Where/how did you order the new drive? My drive appears to have failed too.
"DVD read error. Please check DVD"
Sound familiar?

I have a spare drive, I bought it when a friends drive stopped working but then he got BMW to change it under 'goodwill', which is a bit of a cheek consider it was under warranty!

It owes him 180 if you're interested?

Currently retail for 460 from BMW.

It came out of a 2010 car that was written off and the connectors were snapped on the back of the nav unit so he stripped the drives out on it

Edit: also got a whole unit that was out of a 2006 car, which I got in 2007, never did anything with it as I snapped a ribbon connector hooking the main board to the drive. Not sure what the difference is with drives but could strip that one down as well if anyone needs drives. Would help me recover some of the cost.

I sent you an email, not sure if you got it?

It was out of a 6 month old car so hardly any use, it will be like new.

Hi,

My Sat-Nav DVD in my 2005 ('55 Plate E91) 330d seems to have slowly stopped working. Seems to be worse in cold / damp weather and right now appears to have given up entirely. Note I have both a CD and DVD in the dash - setup certainly appears to be the same as the photos in this thread.

Your 'How To' guide looks very useful and as such I'm thinking of replacing the drive myself. I had a couple of questions though, if I could:-

1) BMW (Cobham) service team have quoted around 80 for a new DVD drive - This seems very (worryingly?) cheap compared to the prices quoted above. Cheap is good I guess, but can anyone offer an opinion as to the price difference?

2) Cobham BMW advised me not to attempt this myself as the unit would need 'recoding'. Any idea what this would be? As far as I can tell, I would expect it to 'plug 'n' play' using some sort of standard DVD interface. Could this be because my car's a '55 plate and the original part's obsolete, new part will only work if 'recoding' is performed?

3) I got conflicting advise from BMW Maidenhead who told me the DVD drive cannot be purchased separately but comes only as one until including the CD player and radio. This would be a price of 675 inc. VAT - will need to be coded to the vehicle.

Note that I gave both dealers my registration number so I don't understand the inconsistency!

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

02 Replace DVD player 1 09/2008 65839241764

That is the part you need. Get them to quote on that part.
You may need to code it, not sure if the drive comes unlocked or not, but easy enough to fit yourself.

I am surprised it is now 80 though, it was 450 a while back, but then the CCC unit was 1800 and now you say it is 675, so maybe it is cheap and maybe they have had a load made as they know drives are not everlasting.

See how much a new one is and let me know. You can have this one cheaper if it is of interest. It came out of a car only a few months old so like new.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response!

I phoned BMW Cobham again and they re-confirmed (as you have) that BMW Maidenhead were incorrect. BMW Cobham quoted that same P/N (65 83 9 241 764) as 69.59 + Vat. I don't think BMW Maidenhead were quoting 675 for the full CCC, as I don't really trust them now I don't know.

Bit concerned by the 're-coding' - on all the forums I've looked at it never been mentioned as an issue. Someone elsewhere has also quoted a BMW Service Information bulletin for this part number:-

SUBJECT
CCC - "Please Insert Navigation DVD" Appears on CID
MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series) produced from 1/2004 to 8/2008
E63, E64 (6 Series) produced from 1/2004 to 8/2008
E70 (X5) produced from 10/2006 to 9/2009
E71 (X6) produced from 10/2006 to 9/2009
E82, E88 (1 Series) produced from 9/2004 to 8/2008
E90, E91, E92, E93 (3 Series) produced from 3/2005 to 8/2008
All vehicles equipped with SA 609 (CCC Car Communication Computer)
SITUATION
The navigation map DVD cannot be read or detected. The message "Please insert navigation DVD" appears in the CID (Central Information Display). The navigation system is inoperative.
CAUSE
Faulty DVD drive; read error due to hardening of the anti-vibration gel on the read head
PROCEDURE
Ensure that the map DVD is not faulty by swapping it with a map DVD known to work.

Perform a vehicle test using the latest ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application) diagnostic software.
Diagnose any relevant faults that are stored by completing the test plans.
Perform and complete the test plan "W6590_WAS2-CCC: malfunction" by selecting the fault system "411", "DVD not recognized". Please note the DIAGCODE presented at the end of the test plan. The test plan can be accessed the via the following path:
Select "Function structure\Body\Audio, Video, Telephone, Navigation\Fault patterns\Fault profile 2: Car Communication Computer".
If the test plan prompts to replace the DVD drive, refer to ISTA Repair Instructions "REP 6583580 Removing and installing/replacing DVD drive for Car Communication Computer".

Note: If the DVD drive is replaced, it is not necessary to replace the map DVD or program the vehicle. Please refer to the attachment to this Service Information bulletin, which provides information on the differences when connecting the ribbon cable to the new drive.

PARTS INFORMATION
Part Number: 65 83 9 241 764
Description: DVD Drive
Quantity: 1

So I'm thinking 're-coding' isn't necessary. Any idea what's involved if it is necessary?

Thanks
Steve
