So I got almost 40,000 miles on my car, it’s a 2006, Original warranty expires in June of 2010 and I bought the car as CPO, so extended warranty will last until June of 2012 or 100,000 miles.
My car was at service, and the service guy at BMW just called me to say that my car is ready. I asked him about my next scheduled maintenance due and what is it. So he said that at 11,000 miles I’m due for my breaks and some filter he mentioned which is due at July of 2010. I am pretty sure I won’t do 11,000 mile by June 2010 (when the original warranty expires). He however did mention that just front break jobs are going to be $700 outside the warranty and also mentioned that for $1800 I can buy extra warranty until June of 2012 and it is going to be same as Original warranty the car came with.
So I’m just wondering if you guys recommend for me to go with $1800 for another 2 years or not (bare in mind I do have limited extended warranty until June 2012).

I think he might have been talking about the maintainance plan for $1800..Where they take care of all you regular maintainance for free..Since yoou have a CPO your warranty is good like you said till 2012 but your regular maintaince would not be covered

+1 I think he is also talking about extended maint. Personally, I'd pocket that 1800 and either do brakes myself or take it to a specialist. BMW warranty makes sense to me.. but the maint. plan.. i'd pass on.

Actually, I believe he was talking about maintenance for $1800 until when CPO warranty expires. If nothing major goes worng, does the regular maintenance for 2 years cost more that $1800 ???

How many miles do you drive in a year? The BMW service plans are designed to make money for the dealer and BMW at recommended intervals of 15K a year. Figure you'll get an oil service every 15K which is about $120 give or take to have it done, the brakes quoted $700. Now multiply the oil service by how many times in that 2 year period plus the $700 and that's pretty much it. If anything breaks the CPO will already cover it so I doubt you'll get your money's worth unless you put on some miles!

If you do it through the dealership, yes.

Fluids. Brakes. Oil. Belts maybe. Less that 1800 if done elsewhere.

I don't really put that many miles on my car... Since I had it in August I drove only less than 5,000 miles. So I'm guessing if the patern remains the same I'll end up putting the most 12,000 miles a year. So according to your numbers if I do oil change 4 times in 2 years that makes it... 150x4=600 + 700 for breaks, that makes it $1300. That's still $500 less than what it'll cost for extended maintenance... I'm not even sure about what else might be there that requires regular maintenance... Are tires included in that?
Hmmm... I don't know, may be I'll wait until June to figure this out.

Nope not tires and not even what you stated. BMW will only pay for an oil service every 15K or 12 months. It's OBC based so if the computer doesn't say so you won't get it. You'll only get 2 based on your mileage estimates. You'll also get a brake fluid flush every 2 years from manufacturing date. I really doubt you'll get even or more service for the cost. An able bodied independent shop will save you some money and you can get the parts a lot cheaper than the full retail the BMW service center shows on the invoice for warranty services.

Sounds like a lot of money for maintenance items that may not even need to be addressed during the warranty period. Knowing BMW, they will not work on it unless the time tables or the car advise it. If you save the coin and spend wisely when maintenance issues comes up, you may save quite a bit over the span of the potential coverage.

It's really not necessary to calculate anything. The finance manager tried really hard to sell me the maintenance plan. It's just common sense that they try that hard because there's huge profit in those things.

I personally would not do it. You will eventually need to due rotors and that will cost you alot of money but less than 1800 so dont do it. I would have BMW specialist put those brakes on and rotors so you dont have squeking.

So dont buy extended warranty for maintenance.

I opted for it thinking it was worth it b/c of the rotor and pad changes; now ya'll are making me regret it. =P
