Upgraded my sideskirts to M3 reps. Didn't find a DIY on the subject so I put this together. This is fairly easy to do. However, I added some extra steps to give it the perfect fit. Figured it would help you guys out.
Oh, and before I get the question... Where from and did the color match? I bought them from Jay@ModProjeKt.com
. From what I could tell, the color is a great match. However, I must say that even if it were slightly off, it would be hard to tell. The new sideskirt has many curves and since there is no section that has the same angle of the rest of the body, it will reflect light differently. That means even if its not 100% matched, you probably wouldn't notice.
First, basic tools needed:
-Small flathead screwdriver
-Plastic Pry Tool
-Golf divot tool
Begin by prying off the door sill. This just pops off.
Next, use your screwdriver and lift the center pin on the black clips. Remove completely.
Use your plastic pry tool and pop out all the clips. This will free the top of the sideskirt.
Next, take your divot tool. Mine has sharp tips. Wedge it beneath the white clips and slide them out. With this tool, this step is a breeze. Without it, well... some say its a PITA.
Now, get on your back and remove the 8 or 9 screws from below the car. Take a look at the new sideskirt. That'll give you an idea of where they are located. BTW, this is where you need the T27 bit.
Go to the rear wheel well. Using your 8mm socket, remove the these two screws.
Now it's time to remove the sideskirt. Grab the rear edge and pull.
Here is the back of the factory sideskirt. Transfer the 4 plastic clips and 2 metal clips onto the new sideskirt.
You can now reverse the steps for installation. But I noticed that the new sideskirt had a little challenge. The front edge sits more flush to the car. Problem: there is a factory fender screw that is in the way. I decided to remove it. I probably could have replaced it with something flatter but after removal, my fender was as snug as ever so that was good enough for me.
So that's it right. Well, if you look at this image, you may notice a small problem.
Did you see the problem? My family didn't but I did. The top of the sideskirt and the bottom of the door isn't flush.
Here's where the modification comes to play. First, remove those black clips from the top of the sideskirt. Next, I used some square dowels to wedge the top edge outward. You can use anything lying around the house. Just note it must be fairly thin as the door must close with them in place.
Keep doing this until the sideskirt has the perfect fit. Now, get a drill bit and tap new holes into the sideskirt and through the door sill. You'll want to be close to the edge so that the black BMW door sill will cover the holes after installation.
Next, install the factory black clips back in your NEW holes. Of course, you will not be using the original holes. We're almost done now. Next, we have to install the door sill. On the bottom of the door sill will be a black fin that runs the entire length. It has notches to accommodate the black clips.
Use your plyers and snap off some more so that it fits around the newly-moved black clips.
Okay, take those white clips and slide them back onto the door sill. Snap it all back into place and everything will look as it should.
Here's that credit card again. Now, it's flush.
Well, that's it. This should take you 1/2 - 1 hr to complete. Maybe a little longer if you do the modification like I did. I have no pics of the completed job yet as I hate taking pictures of a dirty car.
