320d Fuel Economy

Just did a 158km round trip from Perth to Mandurah and back. Minimal driving around at destination so basically a test of fuel economy on the freeway run. Caught a bit of traffic on the way back so I think these figures could be improved.

5.0 ltr/100kms at and average speed of 77.0km/h over the 158km distance. On a 61 ltr tank that's a range of 1220kms! The onboard computer was giving me a range to empty of 1102kms when we got home - add on the 158kms for today's trip and that gets you 1260 so that's about right.

Car was carrying 2 adults and 2 kids, no luggage. Running on standard BP Diesel - still no BP Ultimate Diesel in Perth.

How does this compare to other 320d drivers?

Did a trip up to the Dandenong Ranges on the weekend, fuel was sitting on about 5.5 per 100 on Eastlink on the way up, fuel economy should improve a bit once the engine runs in more I think, 5 per 100 sounds about right though mate.

Looks like you've got the same spec as mine - enjoying it?

I'm not overly impressed with my 320d's fuel economy. Usually in the very high 7s and occasionally over 8. Never been below 7.6. Driving is mainly longer commutes (20km each way, 1/2 of that is urban/city traffic).

The demo we tried (3,000km up) was sitting on 6.1 l/100km average - pretty impressive I thought.

Been a tickle over 6 with mixed city & highway driving, I'm happy with that given it's my first tank of fuel & I'm still getting used to it.

Gee, that is what im getting for my 330d. U must have a heavy right foot. i shoul be getting around low 7 but i drive it a bit hard most times so consumption goes up a bit. If my wife drive it, i think she will be able to achieve the 6.8l/100k figure publish by BMW.

Kingclifton, try doing a test reseting computer on a long trip using cruise control on highway. Figures should really come down below 6 for ur 320d on highway. If not, u might be due for a service or something is not right. Going a bit off topice but for a diesel, ur dealership should every 3rd engine oil change change the air filter and fuel filter which may improve economy a little. I personally think the dealership should change air filter and fuel filter every 2nd oil change coz not servicing air filter for over 50000ks is silly. Should be clean out/replace every service i think.

It's only done 5000km. I think my city driving is what pushes it up. Generally I drive pretty lightly. I used to use Steptronic mode all the time; I tried D and it reduced it a bit, but not much.

I don't think its my driving style as my 1.8T A4 and TT each returned around 8.4 (versus ~10 rated figured) and I managed low 12s from my 6.0 V8 HSV Clubsport.

At some point after March 2009, the E90 320d's were upgraded to a more greener EfficientDynamics engine. Power remained at 130kW / 350Nm while
consumption and CO2 emissions reduced from 6.0 to 5.4 l/100km and 160 to 144 g/km respectively.

Although it may not explain your consumption, it may be worthwhile to find out which engine you have.

Same thing happened to the E90 330d in December (after I bought my car of course), consumption reduced from 6.8 to 6.2 l/100km. The BMW Media Release for that change is here...

Indeed bcoz.

KingClifton didn't indicate which specific model he/she had. 20km each way, 5 days a week, 200km a week, 25 weeks - might be pre-improvements but I'd assumed otherwise.

Regardless, an improvement of only 5-7% over an A4 1.8T in identical conditions would certainly suggest a serious problem should be considered with the BMW.

I always thought that our 330d has Brake Energy Regeneration and Electric Power Steering. I think i read it some where in the brocher or maybe the european spec had them standard in early 2008-09 but not standard in OZ until recently.

Dont u hate it when they do that.

Yeah and given they only introduced the 330d to Oz just 6 months earlier. I think the Europeans got the new engines while we got the surplus old stock.

I've got a September 2009 build which had the Efficient Dynamics upgrade (5.4L/100km) but not the MY2010 which had further improvements.

Of note, I've been staring at the instantaneous fuel needle. The 'highway' stretch of my journey home (probably 7 or the 20km) is a constant incline and the needle rarely drops below 13L/100km. I reckon its just a factor of my commute.

Anyone know how to tell if the car had the ED upgrade? Does yours have the ED stickers on the rear window KingClifton?

Mine's April 2009 and has had ED stickers, but I thought April was too early?

U got a ED sticker? What does it look like?

Mine is a May 09 production 330d and it doesn't have the sticker.

I don't think the ED sicker reflects anything that the car is an efficient dynamics model. Mine had one (which I had removed when I got my windows tinted)

My 320d has now done 14000 k's so is nicely loosened up. Most of my driving is inner urban with occasional freeway trips to Geelong & up to Albury. I have never re-set the fuel consumption reading since purchase & it is sitting on 7.4 l/100km.

On freeway trips between Melbourne and Geelong, sitting with cruise on 103 km/h, i'll get 4.4 to 4.5 l/100km. Of course once you hit Geelong & lights etc that goes up but the actual freeway driving is always less than 5 l/100km.

Have basically halved my fuel bill from my previous e39 525i which used to get approx 13l/100km out of an average tank.

Can someone post a pic of this ED sticker?

I think dealership must have removed mine when triple pack went in.

Cheers
