Purpose of the little red thing under the rear-view mirror?

I can only speculate that it's some sort of anti-theft deterant, but on my e92 it does not turn on at all. Is this supposed to turn on when the car is parked and locked? Or does it require some sort of dealer-installed alarm system for it to turn on?

and twisting it causes the mirror to flip to the reduced-glare position (for those of us without premium package)

FYI, aphall just purchased the OEM alarm, and I believe parts came up to around $250. After a very simple install, the clown nose began to blink. All the wiring and electrical plugs are in the car waiting for the alarm pieces to be plugged in.

Now he just has to activate the alarm function at the dealership.

Jason, can we close up this thread?
It's been already "paid" in good faith in the form of sponsorship and support.

And the corollary is that if it doesn't blink, you're advertising to the potential thieves that you don't have an alarm!

I was also very surprised to find it as an option here in Switzerland.

Thought that an alarm and locking wheel nust would be standard ? You would have a DEVIL of a job getting insured in the UK without an alarm.

Box duly ticked - ordered.

Q? turn the clown nose??

I did not know you could switch hte rear view mirror to a reduced glare phase LOL!!

Is this true you can twist it to flip the mirror?? I have had my car from October 5th and I thought my only recourse was to use the rear sunshade to reduce rear traffic headlights...

LOL

I was suprised too that the alarm was not standard. Explains the lack of a chirp when I lock or unlock the car.

Anywho, ordered the alarm to be installed on Friday as well as the sunglass holder (dealership is giving me free labor on that one).

Having no alarm allows for dealer offer it as an option and profit from the relatively simple install. My dealer wanted ~$800. Kind of crazy given that the car is prewired and the $250 of parts just bolt on.

I think that BMWNA does it intentionally to keep dealerships happy and to give them an extra revenue opportunity. Alarms don't sell cars, but people still expect them, especially when dropping $40k on a car. They want to protect it.

That the car is practically impossible to steal without a key is irrelevant...
