RUF RGT-8




RUF has unveiled the next generation RGT, the RGT-8.

Based on the current 997 Porsche 911, the RGT-8 "is powered by a completely new RUF designed V8 engine with a 180° crankshaft flatcrank." It features "four valves arranged spherically together with multipoint fuel injection [which] ensure optimal mixture conditions while the dry-sump system supplies the necessary lubrication." Boasting a capacity of 4.5-liters, the V8 produces 404 kW (542 hp / 549 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.



To ensure maximum sportiness, RUF made the RGT-8 as light as possible. It comes with aluminum doors, an aluminum hood, a carbon fiber engine cover, and a carbon fiber rear spoiler. Other performance goodies include ceramic brakes, an integrated roll-cage, and 19-inch forged alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

In terms of styling, the RGT-8 remains pretty faithful to the standard 911. However, if you want a more exclusive appearance, RUF offers a Frère package. Inspired by the 550 Coupe, that Paul Frère drove to victory in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Frère package consists of redesigned front fenders, a unique front end, and special interior trim.

RUF is planning to launch the RGT-8 in 2011, so look for more information to be released later this year

The Bespoke V-8

So how does a V-8 fit in a 911 engine bay? Pretty well, actually. Ruf claims that the engine is only 0.8 inch longer than the current flat-six and that it is an amazing 88 pounds lighter. Helping keep the dimensions compact is the lack of any external belts on the engine—the water pump, A/C compressor, and alternator are driven by a direct connection to the crankshaft and sit on the underside of the V. The engine also uses dry-sump lubrication, eliminating the need for an oil pan. The dry-sump design could allow the V-8 to be mounted lower than the flat-six, but the bell housing on the stock manual transmission prevents taking full advantage of this design feature. Boss Alois Ruf hinted that if his company built a new gearbox to allow the engine to be lowered for, the center of gravity could be further improved.

“I don’t like the rumble of a typical V-8,” explains Ruf. “This engine has a more nervous sound like a racing engine.” That’s because the Ruf V-8 uses a 180-degree flat-plane crankshaft design, like that of the Ferrari V-8 and many racing engines. Another item borrowed from racing is an oil channel that runs through the hollow crankshaft to optimally lubricate the engine’s bottom end. The rest of the engine’s features read like a laundry list for high-revving V-8s: four valves per cylinder, variable intake- and exhaust-valve timing on the dual overhead cams, titanium connecting rods, and two electronically controlled throttle bodies are but a few examples.
