Anyone get LoJack?

Before the flaming begins, I did a search and came up with nada... unless of course I can't spehl rite.

I was hoping that BMW assist and the GPS system would obviate the need for a tracking device, but it doesn't. Since there's only a modest reduction in insurance cost, I'm debating whether to get this or not. Putting the insurance savings aside, do you think it's worth the extra $895?

Damn, I searched "anti-theft" and found something from 11/05. I'm still curious about what people are doing now a days...

It doesn't? They can track it for you when you have BMW Assist... and the '07s have it for 4 years. Then you can get LoJack added later if you don't keep Assist.

The problem is that, if someone steals your car, BMW assist doesn't recognize it. It's only activated when you push the button, but doesn't act like an alarm system. At least that's what I was told... It seems like if you have an alarm installed and it's activated it should somehow activate the BMW assist, but I was told it doesn't.

BMW Assist has a stolen vehicle recovery feature. The following taken directly from the BMW Assist faq (http://www.bmwusa.com/owners/bmwassist/faq)

Does BMW Assist track my vehicle's location?

No, the BMW Assist system only transmits your vehicle's location:

1. When the vehicle initiates the Automatic Collision Notification service after an airbag deploys or a severe impact occurs,
2. When the "Customer Relations" and "Service Request" button is pushed or when the vehicle's sensors detect the need for upcoming services and automatically transmit service information to your local BMW center on all 2004 and later 5, 6 Series and 2006 and later 7 Series, 2006 BMW Assist-equipped 3 Series Sedans and Sports Wagons and 2007 and later BMW Assist-equipped X5 and 3 Series.
3. When you request service by pushing the "SOS", "Wrench", "Emergency" or "Roadside Assistance" button,
4. If you request Stolen Vehicle Recovery service by calling (888) 333-6118 after filing your police report (on all 7 Series produced 9/05 and later and all other BMW Assist-equipped models produced 10/04 or later).

This is free for 4 years on all new '07 purchased with Assist. Service costs afterwards are indiciated on the FAQ link above.

I read that... It still requires that you call BMW to have it activated and only after the police report is done. By that time, the car could be in 1500 pieces...

Why wouldn't you fill out the police report immediately and call the number immediately?

I'm not sure how you're expecting to find the car any faster, short of installing your own GPS tracking device on the car. Police will be much more efficient at finding your vehicle than you alone, and I'm sure the police wouldn't help you out until you fill out a police report, anyway.

There's also the argument that nobody would want a stolen car back ANYWAY by using LoJack, but that's a totally different argument all-together.

The report doesn't take you 2 days to fill out.

It takes about 5 minutes to file the report over the phone. You call, they ask you for make, model, year, color, license number and your personal info. Tell them you have BMW Assist. Done.

Then call BMW Assist with the report number. When BMW locates the car they call the police and reference that report number. Police go to the car and retreive it.

If a chop shop can cut up your car in that amount of time then the police have bigger problems.

Anyway, if you have insurance you get a new car. Which everyone should have.

I plan on getting lojack. BMW assist is easily thwarded... by either putting something over the sharkfin antenna... knocking it off... or even unplugging it. Lojack is hidden on the car and also have the early warning option. If the car moves from the spot without the RF device you are notified immediately. Also cops LOVE lojack calls. I have some friends that are HPD and whenever they get it - they are all over it - most likely they can catch the theif in the act.

Msg me if you have any questions regarding lojack I have done a lot of researched and talked to many people regarding BMW assist vs lojack.

Or just parking in an underground garage.

I think if you are concerned about your car and getting it back then yes Lo jack is worth it!

+1.

BMW assist uses GPS which is a LOT harder to get a clear signal with vs LoJack that uses long range RF which can be picked up very easily.

Unforunately BMW assist and lojack dont have the feature I want... Car shutdown. But that can be dangerous too.

Cars get stolen in parking garages too! Maybe not those fancy ones with elevators.

What I meant was if a car with BMW Assist were stolen, the thief would only have to park it in an underground garage to defeat the signal.

I am not sure you will see any insurance savings by adding Lojack to a BMW Assist equippedcar. At least with USAA, they told me that BMW Assist max's out the anti-theft discount - nothing additional for alarm or anything else.

I got extra off my insurance with lojack+early warning and I have BMW assist. The early warning makes a big difference and the speed of lojack also helps on insurance. In insurance eyes the faster you get the car back the less likely there will be as much damage (things removed etc etc).

LTO,
What is the gp500? Is that the tech name for early warning?

no. i was told at the dealership that i would get another $5000 if my car wasn't recovered in 30 days. this is what the lojack website says:
Guarantee Plus 5000 (GP 5000) (not available in New York)
An additional 5-year warranty that guarantees up to $2,500 for your reimbursable expenses if your vehicle is stolen and not recovered within 30 days from the date of theft or reported theft or is deemed a total loss due to theft. IN addition, you could receive up to $2,500 toward the purchase of a replacement vehicle from the dealer where you originally purchased the vehicle
