station wagons are less likely to roll over like SUV, better mpg, cheaper, and drive almost like a sedan.
Plus, not all SUV's give you more cargo space. my family has X3 and RX300, and they don't carry much stuffs (compare to a Camry), (but yeah, the trunk of the E90 is small)

Think of a station wagon as an extended car. The Dodge Magnum and the E91s are real cool versions of that.

When I was a kid, station wagons were the "in" thing, then SUVs took their place. Now those whose parents drove SUVs are sick of them, and want something different.

E91 is not that cheap if you have all the options added, one cool thing is fun to drive unlike the SUV with better MPG.

This is why it's not as safe to have an SUV:

safety probably the #1 reason why people pick station wagon , instead of SUV. look at how successful volvo is with their wagons.

Right. Why buy a station wagon if you need the space. Why not an SUV?

Actually, why do people buy SUVs? Why not buy a minivan if you want more space?

Or why buy a minivan? Heck, you get more space with a regular size van or small bus.

If anything, the SUV's are a craze...station wagons carry more stuff than SUV's.

You buy a E91 for the same reason you buy an E90. Same car, same awesome handling, just a bit more functionality. That's why such a high percentage of 3-series in europe are wagons. They don't have the silly hang-ups that some folks in the USA do. To compare an E91 to an SUV is like comparing an E90 to a SUV.

Bottom line: this was not a serious question. Go drive an E90, E91, and X3. You can't tell the E90 & E91 apart. The X3 is quite different.

Can you imagine how many of us would have bought a wagon if it came in RWD 255hp?

Or imagine if they dropped the bi-turbo into one and gave it xDrive to boot!!!! Damn that would be one sickass car!!

Or I could just get a Magnum R/T, 340hp.......tons more room than the E91

is this a serious question or a troll? in reality, the question should be why buy an suv?

as has been pointed out in this thread, you get more cargo space from a minivan than suv if that is your primary need (not to mention much better gas mileage). if you just want marginally more space than a car, a wagon should be sufficient. you get far better driving performance from a wagon over an suv as well (minivans drive better too...).

as far as an suv being a better choice for someone, if you genuinely need off road performance then the suv is the obvious answer. another reason is asthetics, which is also fine. its too bad that many people live with the considerable tradeoffs of owning an suv simply for the asthetics all the while insisting they have it for space, safety, etc...

My current Audi allroad is the same interior as sedan but greater functionality and I can lower the car to stiffen, or give it 8 inch clearence in bad roads. IT has 6spd manual, twin turbo and everything else the sedan has.

I don't want an SUV, I want a car! If I need the room, we use the Sienna minivan. SUV's suck unless you tow things or need it to make a living.

In europe I believe 60% of all A4's and A6's are Avants (wagons). Why waste the space above the trunk? IN europe they are not so stuck up on image as oppose to the drive and function. IN the US we are stuck on image first. How many really believe SUVs make them macho? Safer? More independent?

Peronally I think the A6 is better looking in Avant form. The E91 I think also looks better than the sedan. Not as boxy. THe coupe is great looking.

If I can get the 335i with everything the coupe can do but have 4 doors and some extra room in back, expecially to flip the seats down and visit Home Depot then its gonna be a no brainer!

If Audi made a MT in the A6 Avant I would not even entertain a thought to look at anything else. THe A4 interior is downmarket from my Audi and IM not gonna get a new car with a lessor interior than what I came from.

If the S4 was not such a gas hog I'd be strongly considering that.

Even in 328 form the E91 will be super.
