M3 vs. 335is
Hi, everybody. This is my first post!
I'm in the market for a performance BMW. I've always loved the M3. I'm not sure why except to say that I thought that it was the performance monster in every category. When I began to investigate it a little further, I became confused. The dyno chart on the M3 shows a constant level of torque at 250 ft-lbs through the entire RPM range. The 335is, however, has higher level of torque from about 3500 to 6000 RPM, arguably the range where one would generally drive when driving aggressively. So, if the 335is has higher torque and pretty decent horsepower in the critical RPM, why is it that the M3 beats it in every performance category? I just don't understand the dyno charts (I would think the graphs would be for the OTHER car than they actually are) and how that translates into such M3 "giddyup" at lower RPM. What I'd really like is a BMW that is agile and full of torque. I want to set my hair on fire when I punch it from a stop. Doing 155 mph may be fun, but I can't do that around here! Can someone please help!? Thanks. |

To provide some extra info, the following links show the dyno charts I have found...
M3 Dyno Chart http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138475 335 is Dyno Chart (the third one down) http://n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8650 When the M3 only shows 250 ft-lbs of torque, compared to the 370 ft-lbs of the 335is, how is it that the M3 can do 0-60 in 4 seconds, whereas it takes the 335is 5 seconds? |

Oh and I had the choice of the M3 or the 335is. I really enjoy my 335is, the M would have taken a lot of $$$$ to make me grin. Now I just gotta get a LSD for the 335is, and Ill be a happy camper. |

OK, so assume that you had the extra $9,000-$14,000 it takes to get the M3, when compared to the 335is. Would you still get the 335is?
Also, what $$$$ would you be buying so that the M3 made you grin? Procede? J3? Active Autowerke? Dinan? |
