Question guys!!! Transmission overheating warning light!!!

Hi guys, I have a 2006 E90 xi. I drove 5 km today and a yellow indicator which refers to the transmission (like a key logo) went on, 1 km later the indicator went red and I immediately stopped the car. I managed to bring the car home after stopping a few times in order to let it cool off. My car has 60k miles. I've had no issues with the vehicule, I've done all maintenance and oil changes as prescribed by BMW. There is no clunking or issue with the transmission before or after the light when I drive nor do I have any issue with my clutch, it's 6MT.

Any idea on what might be my problem? Could it be a sensor or is it a major issue? I can't even drive to my garage, I'll probably just tow it there! There seem to have been a fan turning on as soon as the yellow light went on even after I stopped the engine, it was still going.

Let me know if anyone of you guys has had a similar issue and what came out of it.

Thanks

Hmm that sounds strange. I have an '06 xi as well and am approaching 60k soon...just hit 52100. Kinda makes me nervous. I wanna say I've heard that autos have a shitty transmission but I'm not sure on that. Let us know what your shop says. Good luck.

Only help I can offer is I know you have a GM transmission in a 325, find out what other cars have the same one and see if there are overheating problems with those? Or just wait and see what the shop says

It thought only the 328i has the GM transmission. The 325i/330i/335i all get the ZF transmission.

Oh, news to me. I thought the 325 had the GM transmission as well as the 328, and the 330 and 335 got ZF

Perhaps the transmission oil is overheating due to the fan that helps to cool it,
malfunctioning.

If you have a warranty then take it to the dealer. If not, this would be a good time to buy the BT scan tool. Keep up posted and good luck.

On the 6 speed manaul, trans oil temp is not monitored therefore it is impossible for you to have a trans over heat warning. The transmission is not your issue. Based on what you said about the fan coming on at max speed when the warning comes on leads me to believe it is in fact your engine that is overheating. Most likely cause is the electric waterpump fitted to this engine. It is a known weak point on the N51/52/52k/54 engnies and is the most likely failure on your vehicle as well. I don't recommend driving it anymore and having towed into your shop of choice. Hope that helps and good luck.

I think 328xi's have the GM tranny, and 328i, etc. get ZF. Not sure about 325xi and 335xi though. Odd, since xi is AWD, and my Audi A4 B5 quattro has a ZF tranny in it. I would have thought the xi's would have the ZF in them as well.

The verdict!

Water pump! Hear this guys. If you want to buy the water pump at the dealership it will cost you over 800$ here in canada but if you bring it in for them to fix it, it will cost you $569 + taxes including labor. One cleaver way to ensure you don't get you own mecanic to do the work! Its insane to act like this. I figure this pump isn't cast alloy but some kind of aerospace material lol! $800 for a pump..... insane!
