Hi All,

New to the board, so I'm sorry if this is a silly question. I've noticed that some US 3 series cars are labeled as being from South Africa, but I thought that all US 3's were made there- is that true? If it's not, are there any differences between the ones made in SA and elsewhere? I remember that at one point VW quality depended quite a bit on which factory made the car. I hope that's not the case with BMW.

No, not all US 3 series cars are manufactured in South Africa. My 2010 328i was assembled in Regensburg (Bavaria), Germany.

Can't speak to the quality control issues, but BMWs have been made in South Africa for years...

I don't recall hearing about any differences from the German-built cars to ones built in SA. Aside from the word on the sticker, it would be impossible to tell. Mine was built in Germany, but I'd have no problem at all with an SA-assembled car.

Mine was built in Germany. My Girlfriend's was built in Rosslyn, SA and hers hasn't spontaneously combusted yet, so I assume that those built there are fine. I can't tell any difference in quality of paint, assembly, etc between ours.

Mine was built in SA. The paint is glossy, car is as tight as a 3-series should be and no funny squeaks/rattles, runs fast and yes, still suffers the HPFP symptoms. No specific issues comparing to German-made ones.

FWIW, the Rosslyn plant actually won 2 JD Power awards in the past 10 years.

Do you remember which month/issue? I'd like to read that.

Does anybody know how you can tell from the VIN if your car is built in South Africa or Germany?
