Found a serial port at the OBD hook up??

Hello everyone, nice to be here..

I just bought a 07 335i. While a was farting around in the car.. I looked behind the OBD panel and saw a serial port attachment?? Now I've heard of
chips in cars but never played with them. There was NO discloser of this during the purchase so I'm really pee'd off..

How can I determine what software is on it, without damaging anything?? I've searhed around but don't know where to start?? HELP??? Is there only one kind of software used to program the firmware?? Or many..

Thanks for any help,

G..

It can be just a serial interface for a flashing device that previous owner forgot to remove, not necessarily a chip. you'll probably be safe just unplugging it...

Free tune on the car and you're mad? Remove it and I'll pay the shipping to have it sent to me

Or, should I just look in the control box right hand side under the hood in front of windscreen?? Thanks for the replys everyone.. I've found "PROcede" software for vishnu that uses a serial port to program so far. Any others??

Here's an update to this:

I was runing the hose for my boost gauge and found this attached to the serial port stuffed beside the instrument custer. It has a relay to it and some other componet as well?? any ideas?? The large gauge wires were cut off and looks as tho they tapped or spliced into the wiring just above the drivers left shin as I see the remnamts of someones work. The serial port and one thick shielded wire went across to the passengers glove box area where I found them cut off and nothing else there.

Does any one know what this set up might have been?? As I would get the removed componets and reinstall this. As someone already did some of the work?? LOL Thanks for your inputs.

those electrical relays are probably used to switch on high current devices. So in this case, he probably had some type of aftermarket lighting (angle eyes HID, fog light HID) or possibly a radar detector hard-wiring, etc. i am guessing at this beacuse I see that he has cut the wires to where the relay goes out to.

usually the fuse box can't provide enough current for these devices without blowing a fuse. In any case, it looks like he knew what he was doing because those are automotive-grade electrical relays with decent wiring gauge. you can just remove the relay for now, they are no longer serving any purpose.
