DINAN Stage 3 335i NEARLY matches BMW M3

CarandDriver tested a Dinan Stage 3 car with all the goodies:

http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...d9655cf548.pdf

According to their numbers it comes near an M3.

Compare the numbers to a 6MT M car and DCT M:

http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...49021fcf2c.pdf

http://www.caranddriver.com/var/ezfl...49021fcf2c.pdf

We've all heard countless stories of this Reflash and this tune demolishing an M car. We've seen the vids. It's nice to get numbers for comparison sake. Ofcourse, YMMV. I mean this 3 has over 140lb more torque. It still remains very close. The Dinan S3 has a stronger midrange, ofcourse, but the M still takes the cake past 100mph. Very interesting.

I have still yet to see a thread where the dinan was actually better than something and not 'nearly'. Regardless, nice information.

By the time you pay for all that **** you might as well should have bought an M3 and saved yourself some cash.

Agreed. I'd never understood why some people would buy a "lesser" car and then spend so much money turning it into an "upper" car. When it's all said and done the cost would have been the same to buy the car in the first place.

Least performance for most money - wins hands down!

For me, as Dinan Fanboi( I also really like Procede, cause it's a good engineering product), If I'm spending that money on Dinan and getting my car red flaged so it couldn't get extended warranty anymore, I'd rather spend all that money on BMW performance parts and have an authentic Bavarian car. But If I'm looking for performance I'm just going streight for Procede and the whole works(FMIC,OC,Meth, etc).

I still really like Dinan products.(not for me at this time)

What!! The supposed Dinan S3 did 13 flat in the quarter mile. There are people who ran 12.8 with the stage 2 reflash only. 335 will never beat an M3 I dont know why people do these comparisons. People spend 15K+ and it still doesn't come close.
Close thread please

Explain how a 335 will never beat an M3 - in what ways?

Show me an example of a tuner company who produced a 335 that is better all around than the M3. Of course with enough money you could make anything better but you can't do it reasonably in this case.

Speed wise you can get a tune that will make a 335 outrun a m3 for not to much money. All around? Some big brakes, a good coilover kit, a tune and your getting real close imo.

To add a little flavor, I have Dinan S2 and recongnize that the extra stuff in S3 essentially adds no more accerleration performance. Aside from suspension components, this car is going to go in a straight line about as fast as a S2 reflash with nothing else.

Here we are trying to make our cheaper priced 335s like an M3. On the Porsche boards they are trying to make their Cayman S like a Carrera. Though I think the Porsche boys get there cheaper than we do

Here is MHO on this topic based on MY experience, I bought a brand new 2008 335I E90 with all options but Nav and got it for $49xxx got $5000 Off and put down $2500 and my payment is $540. I looked and priced my option with similary equipped M3, it was a $67xxx got $2000 off and with $2500 down my payment at BEST would have been $1189/mo.
Now here is what I have spent to date on the car

JB3 $579
2.0 Update $50
Stett FMIC $950
Stett Intake $430
Meth Kit $790
Britalman Exhaust $680
Catless DP $327
ALL PARTS WERE NEW AND PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED AT PERFORMANCE SHOP except the Exhaust it was used for 4000 miles. the total comes to $3806 so to those who say that a 335I owner must spend sooo much money to get the performance out of the car, I say "NOT REALLY" I just dynod 434 WHP and I have KILLED every M3 except a Supercharged one that I raced and even then, he only gained on me at over 116 MPH. I am not putting the M3 down by any means
IF MONEY WAS NOT AN ISSUE I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT AN M3 AND SUPERCHARGED THE SHIT OUT OF IT. I am also not claiming that my car or any other modded 335I would take out an M3 on the track but for heavens sake when you look at the amount of money that I have spent on all the mods + the car am $19xxx less than I would have spent on an M3 and am paying 55% less than a payment for an M3 is. Does that mean am getting 55% less of car that an M3...I DON'T THINK SO

Very interesting post! So tempting for 3ers to compare their rides to the Ms when they start modifying. Your numbers tell the story very well - smaller investment initially, relatively modest $$$ in mods and substantial improvements in acceleration. You still don't have an M3, but what you have is awesome in its own right.

You are right ZZZ I used to have an E46 M3 and its awesome to have an M3 but Money doesn't grow on trees. To be honest when I was looking at the purchase of 335i Vs. M3, I know alot of you will say its stupid comparison and what not, I bought a brand new E46 fully loaded except for Nav. U ought to know by now that I don't care for Nav's My sticker was
$52,970 NOW to get the same options with DCT you are looking at $68xxx NOW THATS ALOT OF DOUGH, I know its first V8 and this and that but its alot of money...if I wanna spend that much I would get into the GT-R territory but lets not even go there coz that would me a CHEATER on Bavaria and I can't stomach that....
The other interesting thing that's been going through my head lately now that we know that the next M3 generation will be an inline 6 TT, I can't help but think that BMW came out with the N54 to test the limits of what they can do engineering wise

ALSO my comment about the people that say you have to invest sooo much money into a 335I was directed at some people that were saying $12-$15K in mods. Am not sure what they wanna do with that kind of money...REBUILD the N54 engine lol

on the flip side if you have a warranty problem you might be wishing you had the M3

How much is a good track suspension? $2500?

Plus with the weight savings of the I6 vs. V8 I really do think that a properly modded 335i can beat a non FI M3, for $5000?
