All the mod does it keep the valve open for noise restriction, it should have any effect on hp gains or losses. The sound is not noticeable enough for my satisfaction so i returned it back to stock, if the mod could even be called a mod. Maybe it would have a better effect with an intake? or an exhaust? or a 335

Flooring from 20 mph will sound the same with or without this mod ... you can really only hear it at idle or below 2K when the valve is closed. The youtube clip is a waste other than the beginning when at idle.

Also, this valve provides no back pressure and thus no hp loss ... it is strictly a noise modification ... this has been bashed to death on the e46 sites.

does the valve have any real function?

I am no expert by any means, but I would think this valve serves a purpose. My GSX-R 600 has a similar valve in the exhaust that stays closed at lower RPM's. The purpose of the valve is to create more backpressure at low rpms's which will yeild more power. The valve will later open at higher RPM's when the backpressure is not needed. Just like some here have stated that they have noticed losses in power when doing this mod, those who removed the valve on their motorcycles also noticed a loss in low-end power.

Back pressure improves low-end response, so I've heard anyway... forcing the valve to remain constantly open would probably cause a loss in low-end response then...

I had to do the mod when installing quad pipes on my 335. The quad ends where not long enough to fit the valve without having the pipes stand far out from the back of the car.....

Didnt sense any loss of power, but the sound is far rawer and deeper according to friends who stand by as I fire up and pull away....... but I guess thats what friends are for........

But isn't less back pressure better on turbo cars? No difference at the seat of the pants, but I can definitely hear a little more exhaust hum/drone while driving compared to before the mod.

Not sure about your 330, but you'll definitely hear the difference on the 335. When you turn off engine, the valve remains open. When you start, the valve closes for about a minute, then opens again.

This is the 'Golf Tee Mod'. It has nothing to do with back pressure or performance. It has to do with noise and specifically low frequency reverberation at low revs. Something that non-enthusiasts may frown upon being a luxury car etc.

The valve is closed at low RPMs to keep noise in the cabin down. At higher RPMs (not sure when and can't be bothered to find all the other threads that have discussed this) it opens up the second zorst.

It does not slow the car down.
Removal of pipe does not throw any codes.

Removal of the pipe will keep the flap open since the failsafe mode is open.

IMO, the car sounds louder on idle and low revs.

Cool! I just did it. I love it. The car sounds really good now at all rpm's and road speeds. I am soooo stoked to find out about this. Thanks. I have to say, after owne alot of turbo cars, the BMW engineers did a friggin great job to get this car to sound so good. Most turbo cars sound like #ss! - quiet or loud. This car sounds awesome. I wonder if anyone has taken out the middle resonators....hmm..

I had a VW R32 and did the same thing. That car sounded like a baby ferrari. Really good. My recent Audi S4 V8 I put an actual AWE catback on it. It sounded like an Aston Martin. I do miss that sound but not the car all that much (vs the 335xi!!).

I guess I was a dip sh#t to not look for this but actually never would'a thunk it!?

I am a big "sound" fan. My 911 sounds great with pretty cool mod that alot of the guys do called secondary bypass pipe. It is an actual exhaust pipe that goes in place of a secondary muffler. About a $200 part. Pretty low $ in Porsche speak. She sounds pretty good.

Ya did this mod long time ago, kind of make me wonder why 330i and 335i had it but not 325i and 328i. If it is purely for sound, I don't think 330i is that much louder than 325i.
