It's a know fault on them, I had mine replaced 07 320d coupe, I could get mine off by banging the steering wheel, with the palms of my hands

Sorry I sure have made myself clearer, Mine wouldn't allow me to start the car, becuase the lock wouldn't release, so I banged the wheel (suggested by the BMW assist techy) and it worked, it kept me going until I could get it to a dealer.

Question

I,m worried if there are any safety issues with this warning light staying on? the car starts and runs as usual the steering lock engages when you take out the key at the end of your journey! it disengages as you insert the key to start the the car but the warning light stays on!! any clues or do i just have to go to the Dealer???

Yep get it to a dealer asap which is what my dealer told me when mine did this, lock can break in the locked position and then its major hassle getting a car with locked steering onto a transporter and into a workshop.

Will not lock when driving so don't worry about that.

My car has been at Eastern BMW in Edinburgh since Tuesday, with the same problem. I also had an ignition fault warning appearing with the steering lock fault.

The warning light came up on Sunday, phoned the dealer on the Monday and booked it in for the 26th. I was in a hire car by Tuesday night.... Bloody thing wouldn't start and had to be towed to Eastern.

They hooked it up to their diagnostic machine, sent the data to BMW technical and they said it was probably a trapped wire. The dealer reassembled everything and the fault cleared.....until they took it for a test drive and the fault reappeared.

They have hooked it back up to their diagnostic machine and sent the data to BMW technical again. They also went for a drive with it hooked up to their test gear and the fault didn't reoccur.

Hopefully, I'll get it back this week.....

I had this on my 2006 330i and the dealer replaced just the sensor and not the whole steering column. They expedited it in the day after I reported it because they said it was a safety issue and needed correction ASAP. Haven't had the problem on my 2009 335i.

A lot of the time it will come up in yellow which will still allow the car to start. If it is in red the car won't start. Wiggling the steering wheel sometimes releases the lock but often has no effect. If you have the time, my experience was to just let the car sit for ten or fifteen minutes and try again but wiggle the wheel before inserting the key.

Is your car out of warranty? If its under warranty your dealer would have done it FOC.
