If your fuel HPFP has failed, please open a case
We really need to get the NHTSA to reopen their investigation and the only way to do that is to bombard them with complaints - open one for every fuel pump that fails, only 15 people have ever bothered to complain in the original case and they look a bit harder these days at things after the Toyota incidents. Make sure you make them understand on the form that if it failed in traffic how dangerous it was when it failed at speed, when passing or pulling into the line of traffic - they don't care about long cranks and limps in our driveways, they care about accidents or potential dangerous situations.
Report it here http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm only takes 2 or 3 minutes to fill out all the info - have your VIN ready though! Also - there is an online petition that may be worth signing - every little bit helps http://www.petitiononline.com/fixpump/petition.html Also - read Peter Cohan's Article here, great publicity for the issue (and bad for BMW) http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/au...ompa/19560998/

I ask the questions you're afraid to ask.

What I've been saying for years. The only way that the feds know that there is a problem.
Also, make sure that your complaint is well written. Don't complain about the dealer, don't make emotional statements ("I was fearing for my life") Be factual and use good grammar. Provide pertinent information and leave out stuff that is unimportant ("I was driving on Main street and Walnut when...") Don't use slang or phrases that could be misinterpreted. For a good laugh, look at all the "Was driving down the street and the car sped up to 120mph. I was dodging traffic and was scared to death" complaints on Toyotas. It is obvious that many are just pulled out of thin air. |

Thank you. For the rest of you reading this thread, I find it incredible that there are so many people complaining here about the problems with the HPFP, yet there are so few complaints with the Feds.
Accordingly, we can only come to two conclusions. 1. The problem is overblown and nobody here really has HPFP problems 2. People with HPFP problems are too lazy to file a complaint with the organization that matters. This thread should be consistently at the top with bumps saying "I filed my complaint with NHTSA just now." Or would you rather spend your time talking about: 1. cheesy looking headlights and angle [sic] eyes 2. mean dealers that refuse warranty service "only" because you added a zillion mods that caused the failure. 3. how to hide aforementioned mods from the dealers 4. why oversized wheels and tires are actually good for performance 5 why you should change your oil every 50 miles using non-approved oil. NHTSA is understaffed and overworked. They can only follow-up on complaints when they learn about them. The more complaints the better. Please file your complaint now and drop a note here when you've filed. |

I just submitted mine for my first failure back in Jan of this year.
I will submit another complaint very soon as I've been experiencing random long cranks over the past 2-3 weeks. Surely, the pump will fail soon. ![]()

They actually responded back to me about 3 days ago via email. Asked for more information on my HPFP failures. This was after i filed in Feb 2010. So it looks like they are now looking deeper into the issue. So yes, please file!
